Last Friday evening, May 14, at about 5:30 PM, the Roosevelt Island Operating Corp (RIOC) announced that The Blacklist NBC TV show
will be filming scenes Monday, May 17 on Roosevelt Island removing public parking areas used by Roosevelt Island residents, workers and parents of students attending PS/IS 217. According to RIOC:
On Monday, May 17th, Sony Pictures Television will be filming portions of The Blacklist, NBC’s hit criminal mastermind drama starring James Spader and Megan Boone, from approximately 7:00 AM to 8:00 PM in various locations throughout Roosevelt Island. Roosevelt Island Operating Corporation (RIOC) is proud to work with the film and television industry to not only shine a light on our beautiful island, but drive commerce as well.
On Sunday, May 16th, production will be clearing and holding parking in advance of the shoot for equipment trucks and production vehicles in the following areas:
- In front of and across the street from Foodtown between 10 River Road and 40 River Road
- The west side of Main Street between 405 and 475, as filming will be taking place in and around Riverwalk Commons, Granny Annies, Duane Reade, and Piccolo Trattoria
In a letter addressed to Roosevelt Island residents, Woodridge Productions Inc. has emphasized that they “will make every effort to minimize [their] impact on the neighborhood and accommodate residents and businesses while filming.” You may view the full letter, attached.
Today, traffic cones were set up next to Riverwalk buildings reserving the public parking spots for The Blacklist filming.
Upon learning Friday evening of The Blacklist filming the following Monday, Roosevelt Island grandmother Raye Schwartz wrote to RIOC President Shelton Haynes:Hello Shelton,
Once again, RIOC has not only dropped the ball but has endangered many children in the way this filming was announced to our community. There are two schools which bring children in to the island, either by school bus or parents driving them here in the morning and picking them up when the school day ends.
The area opposite Foodtown, starting at 10 River Road is adjacent to our public school 217, and because of social distancing requirements caused by the pandemic, parents cannot just drop the kids off at the front of the school, but must proceed to the west promenade behind the school. Thus the parents must park the car temporarily and escort the younger children to the back of the school yard. Same is true with the school busses. And I’m sure that you must have seen the trucks used by filming crews in many locations in our city…and they often will not pay attention to parking barriers. Further, there’s a string of school busses bringing kids from all over the city to the Child School next to the current 591 Main Street offices. These busses pull alongside 580 Main Street and next to the helix. We’ve had Sony Pictures here on the island many times, but we’ve also had enough notification to make necessary arrangements: remember Spiderman? And we often have had many other film and TV crews.
The fact that this notice was sent Friday night, suggests that the directors at either PS 217 and The Child School did not receive it early enough to make needed arrangements for modifications for ensuring safe arrival and dismissal of the students and faculty. Did your RIOC staff make any needed safety provisions? Will your Public Safety staff take time off from issuing parking tickets for the city and assist the schools? Based on this enclosed notice I would think probably not!
... And even if you aren’t the one who did this, you are the CEO of RIOC and the buck stops with you!
As of Sunday evening, there's been no response from Mr Haynes or anyone from RIOC to Ms Schwartz's concerns.
UPDATE 5/17 - Roosevelt Island playing a stand in for Russia
during Blacklist TV program filming today at Motorgate Plaza.
UPDATE 5/18 - There were no problems with the PS/IS 217 student drop offs and pick ups yesterday due to The Blacklist TV filming nearby and no reports of any significant disruptions caused either.
In 2018, writer/director Aimee Schaefer was looking for a Roosevelt Island apartment to shoot scenes for her short film, The Island, about:
... lives of a small community in the wake of a young boy gone missing in 1989 NYC...
The small community being portrayed in The Island was Roosevelt Island:
1989 New York City is bumping to hip hop. The beat echoes across the 5 Boroughs. Aids is claiming its first victims and the “Wilding” of a Central Park attack lands innocent black youths in prison. The summer heat is epic in 1989. And Jimmy is HOT.
At ten years old, Jimmy knows all about the world of his hood. Roosevelt Island is a slip of land that lies between Manhattan and Queens in the East River. Though the Queensboro Bridge intersects it, the bridge bypasses Roosevelt Island connecting Queens to Manhattan and there are practically no cars on the island.
Jimmy and his friends grew up running wild on the 2 mile by 800 foot island, and mom's feel ok about it because contrary to NYC in the 80s, there is practically no crime on the island. The residents all know each other, this especially true in Jimmy's building, a sprawling castle of concrete, a fortress firmly planted on the island community...
The Island short film was selected to be shown at the 6TH Annual Official Latino Film and Arts Festival this Thanksgiving Weekend. Ticket can be purchased to watch the film online through November 30.

According to the Roosevelt Island Operating Corp (RIOC):
On Tuesday August 27th, 2019 a production will be filming several scenes on Roosevelt Island between the hours of 3:30PM and 9:30PM. Filming will take place at the northern end of the Island, with a scene taking place under the helix during the day.
Please be advised that the scene will involve actors in police uniform using prop weaponry. PSD personnel will be on hand throughout the shooting to ensure the safety of our residents and stakeholders. Pedestrian and vehicular traffic may be rerouted during filming. Please follow all signage and directions of flag personnel and PSD officers.
Roosevelt Island residents with questions often come here seeking answers:
All kinds of tents are being erected in Queensbridge Park. red and white ones, big ones, small ones. What is going on there?
What are those red striped and white tents in LIC across the River?

Please be advised that a helicopter scene for an upcoming movie will be shot on Roosevelt Island’s Cornell Tech campus on Monday, July 8th between the hours of 6:00AM and 10:00AM. The north loop bus service will be closed during these times. The film being shot is Clifford The Big Red Dog. A spokesperson for the movie production added:
Since filming will take place solely on Cornell Tech property, RIOC has no jurisdiction to grant or deny the filming request. However, RIOC staff and PSD have insisted that the helicopter must approach the island from the southeast and only over water before it lands on the Cornell Tech campus. The helicopter will not fly anywhere near our residential buildings and no island operations – save for the temporary closure of the north loop – will be impacted during filming. PSD is working closely with the NYPD Aviation Unit and the FDNY, both of whom will be on the Island to make sure filming is conducted in a safe manner and with minimal inconvenience to Roosevelt Island residents.
In gratitude for the community's cooperation, the movie's producers will provide a Ben and Jerry's Ice Cream Truck with free ice cream at the Good Shepherd Plaza from 3PM-5PM.
If you have any questions, please contact PSD at 212-832-4545.
Paramount Pictures’ and Entertainment One’s CLIFFORD THE BIG RED DOG will be filming on the Cornell Tech campus on Roosevelt Island. Paramount has sought all of the requisite approvals and has taken safety precautions to land a helicopter as part of the filming during a small portion of a single day (July 8th). The studio has been working closely with the Fire Department of New York (FDNY) and the aviation unit of the New York Police Department (NYPD) who will both be on site for the landing. The studio is also coordinating with the Roosevelt Island Operating Corporation (RIOC) and the Public Safety Department (PSD). The helicopter will fly in and out from the south and it will, at no point, be flying over the residential areas of the Island. Here's the story of how Clifford The Big Red Dog got made.

Long time Roosevelt Island resident Nina Lublin reports:
I will say this about our Roosevelt Island Public Safety Department (PSD) -- on Saturday, April 13, they quickly rose to the occasion regarding a bizarre incident by the Good Shepherd Chapel
around 10 am. Please read carefully:
With the Farmers Market in high gear, early Cherry Blossom Festival arrivals out on Main Street, & the usual Saturday morning activity, only a small handful of folks saw a black van pull up to the bus stop by the Good Shepherd Chapel, saw two folks jump out from the van to grab a young woman kicking, screaming and resisting being pulled into the van, which then drove south on Main Street.
A few quick thinking RI folks ran to the PSD office while a few others looked for folks near
Nisi & the Chapel who saw what happened. The one PSD officer who was detailed to the Farmers Market & Crosswalk & closest to what was happening, was among the last to pick up on what was occurring.
In the 60 seconds it took the PSD folks to come out from the office, it was determined that the "grab" was part of a video or movie being recorded by some guy with a small video camera near the church -- WITHOUT any RIOC permit or even notifying PSO that they were even doing this.
The van was pulled over by PSD on its way back from their U-turn at the flagpole & held in front of the PSD office, with it's occupants laughing, the young woman inside saying "I'm OK, really", and with the Sargent in charge, whose name I cannot remember, lecturing the "film maker" about RIOC permits, PSD notifications, and responding to his claim that "we told the people in the bus stop what we were doing", as if that made it OK.
The mom of the two small children (about 4- & 6-yrs old) and a few others were a little traumatized after being too close to what was happening. We all did our best to calm them down.
This could have been a very different event with a different outcome... We are lucky to live somewhere that when we do see something, we do say something -- and quickly.
Bravo to the PSD for doing their jobs -- especially this time.

The Blacklist TV show starring James Spader is returning to film scenes on Roosevelt Island this week.
— The Blacklist (@NBCBlacklist) May 13, 2018According to the Roosevelt Island Operating Corp (RIOC)
The NBC crime-action thriller The Blacklist will be on Roosevelt Island filming scenes for the television series next Monday, Aug. 6 - Friday, Aug. 10.
There will be limited parking on West Loop Road, near the Cornell Tech campus, during this period. Also note, the production company is expected to film several action sequences with actors portraying law enforcement officers, using police vehicles and equipment.
Last Friday, Roosevelt Island resident Katherine Yeske Taylor sent me this photo
Have you heard anything about the seemingly very near miss between a helicopter & the tram this week??Another Roosevelt Island tipster took video of the helicopter and adds:
... video I shot starting at 8:34PM on Thursday, July 19th of a helicopter that was hovering very close to the tram and the Queensboro Bridge.Click full screen icon on bottom right of video for better view.
The start of the video shows the helicopter starting to move away from the bridge. Unfortunately, I... didn’t get a chance to shoot video of the helicopter that a few minutes earlier was flying much closer to passing tram cabins and the tram cables.
I was shocked that a helicopter got so close to the tram cabins and the cables, and have no idea if the helicopter was filming movie/TV footage, or if it was a military helicopter, or something else.
... it lasted almost an hour and was clearly co-ordinated with the Tram as they had an empty Tram moving back and forth in the middle of the ER several times. I was surprised they still had the southern Tram with passengers working. The Chopper had a big bulb photo thing up front which we could see moving to follow the empty TramAnother video of the helicopter seen very close to the Tram.
The photo shows what I was screaming about for half an hour :..THE CABLES! ... Does that Chopper know those cables are there ....but his first several close-in passes there was no Tram in sight ... I understandably thought/feared he might not know the Tram even existed .... only after 20 - 30 minutes did it become clear the empty (Thank God) Tram came out and it was part of a planned event/show.
A post shared by ScottyP (@scottpiro) on
Meteorite Productions LLCbut nothing in the permit authorized a helicopter flying so close to the Tram.
July 18th
3pm to 7pm- Manhattan Tram Plaza/stairs/North Platform
7pm to 8pm- Nonexclusive use of North Cabin
8pm to 9pm- Exclusive use of North Cabin
July 19th
8pm to 8:30pm- Exclusive use of North Cabin
During the filming of “The Sun is Also a Star”, a helicopter was used for a scene at the Tram while the Tram cabin was in motion.
According to information provided by Leitner-Pomo, throughout the filming of this scene, communication was established between the Tram control room, the movie aerial coordinator and the helicopter pilot.
In order to take the Tram shot, the helicopter was hovering in the area at a safe distance with full understanding of the instructions from the Tram control room. The scene was recorded safely and completed without incident.

Aimee Schaefer is the Director and co-writer of The Island, a film set on Roosevelt Island. Ms Schaefer is looking for a Roosevelt Island apartment, preferably in Roosevelt Landings,
NYU graduate short film in need of 2-3 bedroom apartment with no recent renovations. Aiming for a 1970s-1980s look in terms of the amenities and older looking home furnishings are a plus. The film's producer, James Faller adds:
If occupants of the home are not the owners, we will need permission from the management company or landlords in the form of an NYU Location Agreement. Upon negotiation and signing of the location agreement, the location will be insured by NYU’s underwriter for $1 million dollars.
We have a small budget to rent the space and place the occupants in a hotel or air bnb for the week.
Intended dates of filming: one week within the slot of July 6-20th.
Please send one photo of living room and contact information to sweetschaefer@gmail.com with LOCATION as subject title.
We would prefer something inside ROOSEVELT LANDINGS (formerly Eastwood) but are open to other buildings. The older the inside is the better, we are trying to avoid modern renovations since that will mean less work for our production designer.Backstage summarizes the film:
That being said we are open to exploring various options outside of our preferences.
NYU thesis short film “The Island." Synopsis: Inspired by the oral histories of Roosevelt Island, NY. This short film delves into lives of a small community in the wake of a young boy gone missing in 1989 NYC. We see this through the young protagonist, Jimmy, as he attempts to enjoy his summer despite carrying a secret larger than himself. Filmmaker says: "This film has been awarded a Spike Lee Fellowship and will tour festivals around the world upon it's completion."If you are interested, please contact here.
