Roosevelt Island Celebrates National Shakeout Day With Earthquake Preparedness And Tsunami Awareness Presentation Thursday October 17 - This Is A Family Event, So Bring The Children After School

According to the Roosevelt Island Operating Corp (RIOC):

Dear Roosevelt Island Community:

On Thursday, October 17th RIOC and the Roosevelt Island Residents Association (RIRA) will celebrate "National Shakeout Day" by co-hosting a special earthquake preparedness seminar at Good Shepherd Chapel from 6pm to 7pm. RIRA President Frank Farance and local Boy Scouts will be presenting on how to prepare and respond to earthquakes on the island.

Said Mr. Farance, "Do you remember our two earthquakes earlier this year? On Thursday October 17 at 6-7 PM, Roosevelt Island will participate in 'National Shakeout Day 2024' at Good Shepherd Chapel. You'll learn about preparing for and responding to an earthquake, whether here in New York or In California. We will recap the two 2024 earthquakes here, and have opportunities to drill and practice. Although it's a low probability, we'll also cover Tsunami Awareness, which is a kind of earthquake.

"If you have a mobility difficulties, or have a friend or family member, or are standing next to someone with mobility difficulties, you can learn important tips to help keep you and others safe, so please attend. All participants will receive a certificate of participation.

"This is a family event, so bring the children after school."

4.8 Magnitude Earthquake Rocks NYC And Northeast United States This Morning, Did You Feel The Shaking On Roosevelt Island? Tram Tower Support System Resistant To This Kind Of Seismic Event Says RIOC

Did you feel the shaking on Roosevelt Island from this morning's 4.8 magnitude earthquake that hit the northeast United States? 

According to the US Geological Survey:

Tectonic Summary

The April 5, 2024, M 4.8 earthquake near Whitehouse Station, New Jersey, occurred as a result of oblique reverse and strike-slip faulting at shallow depths in the crust. Although this event did not occur near a plate boundary, such “intraplate” earthquakes can and do occur. While this earthquake is relatively small globally, earthquakes of this magnitude are commonly widely felt in the eastern United States because of efficient seismic wave propagation in the region.

Earthquakes in the eastern US are infrequent but not unexpected. Since 1950, 40 other earthquakes of magnitude 3 and larger have occurred within 250 km of today’s earthquake. In that time range, the April 5, 2024, earthquake is the largest. Within 500 km of the April 5th earthquake, 13 earthquakes M 4.5 and larger have been recorded since 1950, the largest being the August 23, 2011, M 5.8 Mineral Virginia earthquake which caused substantial damage and was felt throughout the eastern US. The April 5, 2024, earthquake occurred in a region where faults have been previously identified and may be reactivated at any time.

This is the second earthquake to hit the New York area this year. For comparison, the January 2 earthquake which was centered in Astoria was of a 1.7 magnitude.

The Roosevelt Island Operating Corp (RIOC) sent out this advisory:

Dear Roosevelt Island Community:

This morning the greater New York City area experienced a 4.8 magnitude earthquake, with the epicenter of the quake sitting just west of Manhattan.

PSD is currently assessing the situation on the island. Preliminary reports indicate there are no ongoing safety concerns at this time.

We’ve checked in with all our departments and have resumed normal operations. RIOC will continue to monitor the situation closely and provide the community updates as needed.

Will the Roosevelt Island Tram towers have to be inspected?

RIOC Communications Director Bryant Daniels replied:

Following the earthquake, POMA deployed two tram mechanics to perform a visual inspection of the tram line equipment, looking for any indications of damage. Thankfully, the intensity of the quake was only moderate, and the towers are robustly constructed, with their foundations anchored directly into the bedrock, making the tram tower support system resistant to this kind of seismic event. The inspection was completed with no incidents to report at this time, so operations are continuing as normal.

In light of the earthquake Roosevelt Islanders experienced today (Tuesday), the RIRA Community Emergency Committee is presenting the highlights of October's presentation on Earthquake Preparedness. The presentation will cover immediate response actions, along with a review of yesterday's earthquake. This is a family friendly presentation on Thursday January 4 at 8-9 PM via Zoom. 1.7 Magnitude New York City Earthquake Shakes Up Roosevelt Island, Astoria and Upper East Side This Morning Says US Geological Survey - An Interesting Way To Start The New Year

The United States Geological Survey reported today a 1.7 magnitude earthquake hit NYC at 5:45 (10:45 UTC) this morning shaking up the residents of Roosevelt Island, Astoria and the Upper East Side.

At 10:30 this morning, I asked the NYC Department of Emergency Management (NYCEM):

There were tremors felt this morning on Roosevelt Island, Astoria and Upper East Side sections of NYC.

According to PIX 11 News

I spoke with a USGS spokesperson who encouraged Roosevelt Island residents to report what they experienced this morning during the earthquake.

UPDATE 12:35 - Residents reported hearing a loud boom or explosion like noise at the time of the earthquake. According to the USGS spokesperson, it is not unusual for a loud sonic boom noise to be heard accompanying an earthquake such as the one this morning. The spokesperson did not say the noise heard by residents today was from the earthquake, but that it was possible.

UPDATE 2:00 PM - I asked Con Ed:

Do you have info on any damage caused on Roosevelt Island by today's 1.7 magnitude earthquake?

Here's what we know so far.

Residents have reported hearing an explosion at the same time as the earthquake. Was there any explosion separate from the earthquake?

Any damage to Con Ed Transformers? Was there any power loss.

and the FDNY:

Do you have info on any damage caused on Roosevelt Island by today's 1.7 magnitude earthquake?

Here's what we know so far.

Residents have reported hearing an explosion at the same time as the earthquake. Was there any explosion separate from the earthquake?

Was anyone trapped in building elevators that needed rescue?

According to a Con Ed spokesperson:

There was no explosion involving Con Edison equipment, no damage to Con Edison equipment, and no customer outages.

We suspect that the earthquake was the cause of the noise.

You might want to confirm with the US Geological Survey, which is the federal agency that tracks earthquakes.

And a FDNY spokesperson:

We wanted to update you on the situation this morning that involved several loud booms and shaking on the island.

Con Edison remains on the scene and has reported no ongoing utility concerns. The New York City Office of Emergency Management has also reported no injuries, no impacts to transit, and no structural stability issues at this time.

We will continue to monitor the situation closely and provide the community updates as needed. Please know that preliminary reports indicate there are no ongoing safety concerns at this time.

National Shake Out Day Is October 19, Join The World's Largest Earthquake Drill With Roosevelt Island Emergency Preparedness Zoom Presentation For The Whole Family

Roosevelt Island Residents Association (RIRA) Community Emergency Committee Chair Frank Farance reports:

October 19 is national Shake-Out day where, nationally, communities prepare for earthquakes. Earthquakes do occur in New York City, we've had a couple. Although they can be small, the hazards are the same, and the response is the same everywhere. This is a whole community event for Roosevelt Island, children and youth are especially invited. 

We will cover the following topics:

  • Basics of earthquakes and their impact
  • How earthquakes affect different structures (you might not be home)
  • Response: DROP, COVER, HOLD ON
  • Scenarios: In A Car, On A Highway, Out In the Field
  • Mobility: Wheelchairs, Walkers, Canes
  • Simulation: We'll participate in a surprise drill
  • Q&A

Roosevelt Island Resident Requests Help For Mexico After Devastating Earthquake Yesterday

Horrific tragedy in Mexico yesterday as it was struck by a magnitude 7.1 earthquake. According to the NY Times:

Two strong earthquakes, 12 days apart, have shaken Mexico this month, crumpling buildings, sending panicked people into the streets, and together killing hundreds of people who were unable to escape the destruction....

Roosevelt Island resident Susy del Campo Perea, a Mexican national, asks:
Could you please donate to the Mexican Red Cross that is in need of so many things to help my people, my Mexico where we had 2 earthquakes back to back and where buildings crumble down and are still falling apart?

The images are horrible, places I know.

Mexicans of all sorts, sizes, ages, have been working all day and all night to move every piece of rock to get people out.

Mexico needs you RI!!

Dogs are looking for persons under the rumble of collapsed buildigs. They need to eat.

Citizens with motorcycles are transporting Paramedics, drs and volunteers. They need gas.

We need picks and shovels to keep working.

We need insulin, gauze, sterile water, surgery gloves, working gloves, cribs, diapers.

Governor Cuomo Says NY State Reviewing Critical Infrastructure After 5.8 East Coast Earthquake - Does That Include Roosevelt Island Tram?

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo issued the following statement following the August 23 earthquake.

Updated Statement from Governor Andrew M. Cuomo on Earthquake

The State Office of Emergency Management continues to monitor the effects in New York State from the 5.9 magnitude earthquake that originated near Mineral, Virginia this afternoon.

The state is initiating comprehensive reviews of critical and sensitive infrastructure including the state’s hydroelectric plants, nuclear power plants, key bridges and tunnels, and other assets.
Does that infrastructure review of NY State assets include the Roosevelt Island Tram system including it's towers? I asked Roosevelt Island Operating Corp (RIOC) Vice President of Operations Fernando Martinez:
A reader asked if the Tram Towers or any other piece of Tram equipment need to be re-examined following the earthquake.

Any comment
Mr. Martinez replied:
As a result of a magnitude 5.8 earthquake that occurred on Tuesday, I have received several emails regarding the structural integrity of the Tram.  I have been in constant contact with Leitner-Poma ("Poma"), the operator of the Tram, since the incident occurred. Poma has conducted a thorough inspection of the Tram, and did not find any structural problems.

Unlike railroad or subway tracks which cannot handle any significant movement without buckling, the Tram has a flexible element (the ropes) that allows movement during an earthquake which helps prevent damage to the structures (i.e. towers).

Further, the Tram structure is in compliance with the local building code and its design takes into consideration the seismic values required for New York City.  Essentially, the Tram was well under any seismic level that could damage the system.

Finally, the Emergency Management team of the Operations Department has been monitoring the progress of Hurricane Irene, and is preparing for its impact in the next few days.
How did Roosevelt Island residents experience the Earthquake? An Island House resident had this reaction:
I felt it in Island House, which was definitely rocking. First I thought someone was trying to get in through the door - the door was shaking. Then I thought I was having a stroke - I couldn't understand why the chair I was sitting in (an office-type chair) was starting to roll around by itself. I glanced over at the bird cage, and a hanging bell was rocking back & forth. I really didn't understand it was an earthquake - it really didn't occur to me that it was an earthquake although I could see the room was shaking. I thought some deep explosion or disaster had occurred somewhere - maybe a building collapse somewhere or some horrible disaster in a subway. I thought my building was holding up very well, though, despite the shaking. Then I heard the news that there had been an earthquake - wow - what a weird experience. I've never been through an earthquake before.
Manhattan Park resident Dottie experienced this:
I work at home and felt Manhattan Park shake. I thought I was hallucinating!
Riverwalk residents had this to say about the Earthquake
I felt building swaying at 425 Main. We had one here about 13 years ago, centered in Long Island City of all places. That was freakish!
and:

On the other hand, another resident commented:
wow- first Earthquake on RI in my 29 years of living here and I didn't feel anything...

Earthquake Hits Roosevelt Island - Did You Feel It?

I was sitting in the outdoor patio of Starbucks this afternoon when I felt the ground shake for a few seconds - maybe 10. At first, I thought I was imagining it or maybe somehow feeling the subway below but then started getting messages that an earthquake has hit the East Coast and it was being felt all over New York City including Roosevelt Island.

I spoke with several other Roosevelt Islanders who noticed their chairs shaking and bottles placed on tables moving around. Another person on the roof of a Riverwalk Building reported feeling the building swaying.

whoa. felt the building move here in roosevelt island. effects of the earthquake in va.
Jonathan Kalkin tweeted:
Totally felt the earthquake, thought it was something else
The NY Times reported:
An earthquake sent tremors from the nation’s capital to New York City Tuesday afternoon, the result of what officials said was a 5.8 magnitude earthquake based in Virginia.

There were no immediate reports of damage.

It is not clear how far the earthquake spread, but tremors were felt throughout New York City office buildings and as far north as Concord, N.H....
CBS News is reporting that it was a 5.9 earthquake.
