Jupiter Joe's Sidewalk Astronomy Shows Roosevelt Island Up Close View Of Super Blue Blood Moon On A Chilly Evening Tonight
What do you get when you have a supermoon, which also happens to be the 2nd full Moon of the month, passing through Earth’s shadow during a total lunar eclipse? A Super Blue Blood Moon! Catch this lunar trifecta coming our way on Jan. 31: https://t.co/v5TLJfyx7j pic.twitter.com/UIldc8B0HK
— NASA (@NASA) January 30, 2018
Jupiter Joe's Sidewalk Astronomy came to
Roosevelt Island tonight
to share with residents
a peek at the Super Blue Blood Moon through
his telescope
and to discuss fascinating questions about the moon and astronomy.
According to the Jupiter Joe's Sidewalk Astronomy web site:
... the goal of Jupiter Joe's Sidewalk Astronomy is to help cultivate an interest in learning, an aptitude for questioning and a chance to witness the awe of our great universe. My hope is that for every person that leaves the eyepiece of the telescope having seen the rings of Saturn, the great red spot of Jupiter, or the crater filled surface of our moon, asks themselves one question... "What else is out there?" It's that question that can spark a lifetime of knowledge and inspire career goals.
We hope that you can come out and experience a stargazing event and learn to love the solar system along with your family.
Roosevelt Island looks forward to Jupiter Joe's next visit.

Fantastic Super Blood Moon Photos Taken Last Night From Roosevelt Island - Watch Moon Turn From Bright White To Blood Red
Roosevelt Island resident Frank Farance shares these photos of last night's (September 27) Super Blood Moon taken from the Roosevelt Island Firehouse turnaround. According to Mr. Farance:
"Blood Red Moon" Lunar Eclipse last night. 1/4000th second shutter speed at midnight? The redness of the moon does not become apparent until the bright white is gone,The NY Times adds:
Images From Frank Farance
so you'll see bright white, a dark band,
Images From Frank Farance
and then red.
Images From Frank Farance
To the naked eye, the moon looks like a light bulb that you've just turned off: mostly dark, but with a faint orange glow around the rim. Of course, what our eyes see and what the camera sees is total different. The camera will tell you that there are 17 stops between brightest photo (1/4000th second) and darkest photo (30 seconds long exposure). These are just a couple photos, I stayed for the 3 hour event. It was nice to take life at a different pace, maybe at the pace astronomers did 2000 years ago. One thing I always love about the moon: it looks different on camera than what the eye perceives ... always a puzzle to conjure about human vision (and photography, too).
In a rare astronomical phenomenon Sunday night, people around the world witnessed a so-called supermoon, which occurs when the moon is closest to Earth in its orbit. The event coincided with a lunar eclipse, leaving the moon in Earth’s shadow. The combination hadn’t occurred since 1982 and won’t happen again until 2033....The NY Times has photos of the Super Blood Moon from around the world.
NASA explains the Super Blood Moon.
NASA also announced today that evidence has been found of water on Mars.
Wow!!!

Roosevelt Island Gristedes Supermarket Chain Owner John Catsimatidis Hosts Sunday Radio Talk Show Too - Discusses Immigration, Iranian Nuclear Weapons, Outer Space Development, Presidents Obama/Clinton Comparison, Japanese Economy & More
Roosevelt Island Gristedes Supermarket chain owner, real estate developer, billionaire oilman, former NYC Mayoral candidate and entrepreneur John Catsimatidis is also host of a Sunday morning radio talk show - the Cats Round Table on AM 970.
Yesterday's November 23 Cats Roundtable discussed:
- President Obama's immigration executive action,
- Iranian Nuclear Weapons and the Middle East,
- comparisons between President Obama and President Clinton,
- Outer Space Developments,
- the Japanese Economy and
- national politics
- Herbert London, President Emeritus Of the Hudson Insitute,
- Former House Speaker and Republican Presidential Candidate Newt Gingrich
- Bob Jacobs, Senior NASA Spokesperson,
- Dr. Mireya Solis, Brookings Center and
- Former Senator Evan Bayh, Co Chair Of No Labels political foundation
Also, the Commercial Observer recently interviewed Mr. Catsimatidis about his various business interests including the Gristedes supermarket chain:
... Overall, how is the Gristedes franchise is doing? Here's Mr. Catsimatidis at the March 2013 Grand Re-Opening of the Roosevelt Island Gristedes and 2012 Roosevelt Island Gristedes Town Hall Meeting.
It’s doing okay. It represents less than two or three percent of our company’s sales.
So why still own it?
Some of the people have been with us for 30 years and I’m keeping it for them so they don’t lose their jobs. And if I didn’t have Gristedes, I’d live 10 years longer and I would probably be worth more. Our main businesses are energy and real estate. And we’ve dwindled our businesses in aviation.
What I’m talking about is what’s happening in New York. It’s becoming very competitive. And it’s a big problem. The big problem is we had Whole Foods open up big stores. We had Costco open up. We had Fresh Direct open up. We had Amazon open up. We had Trader Joe’s open up. We had every drugstore in the city [become] a supermarket, just about. So the competition is not like it’s ever been before. And we are fully unionized. And our full-timers get $10 an hour in just benefits. So how do you make that work? And every lease that we have to re-up; it’s a minimum million-dollars-a-year rent. It’s the pressure of the real estate. The pressure of electric rates in New York City. The pressure of paying union charges and union work weeks. And it becomes like, try to win with one hand tied behind your back.

Awesome View Of Roosevelt Island New York City From International Space Station
According to NASA's Earth Observatory:
The narrow island of Manhattan, located between the Hudson River and the East River, is a familiar feature to crews on the International Space Station. The ragged line of shadow cast by the Palisades cliff (in New Jersey) crosses the bottom of the image. Wharves jut into the rivers; bridges are visible thanks to the shadows they cast; and the grid pattern of major streets stands out. On Manhattan itself, the main visual features are Central Park (with playing fields appearing as white dots) and two darker zones where the tallest buildings of Midtown and the Financial District cast long shadows even in this early afternoon view....
The picture was taken on May 5 2014 from the International Space Station.
Here's an up close view of Roosevelt Island from the International Space Station.

It never made it into space, it was used purely for atmospheric test flights, but Enterprise was a significant craft. Originally NASA planned to designate the shuttle Constitution, but after a a sustained write-in campaign, NASA changed its name in honour of the Starship Enterprise from the original series of Star Trek. In 1976, the USS Enterprise (NCC-1701) was being captained by Captain Kirk (played by William Shatner), and some of the original series actors were at the roll-out ceremony in Palmdale manufacturing facility in California....
Beam me up Scotty.
