Rally To Protest Possible Closing of Roosevelt Island Post Office Held Earlier Today - Swimming Or Kayaking To Another Post Office Not An Option Say Congresswoman Maloney and Assembly Member Kellner

As reported in previous posts, the Roosevelt Island Post Office is one of over three thousand nationwide Post Offices that are being considered for possible closing in the future. This afternoon, Roosevelt Island residents and elected officials including Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney, State Senator Jose Serrano, Assembly Member Micah Kellner, NYC Council Member Jessica Lappin and Postal Union officials staged a protest rally in front of the Roosevelt Island Post Office.

Congresswoman Maloney reported that over 2 thousand signatures have been obtained on petitions protesting the possible closing of the Roosevelt Island Post Office. If you wish to keep the Roosevelt Island Post Office open and have not signed the petition yet, please do so. Copies of the petition may be available in your building lobby. If not, Roosevelt Island resident Jonathan Kalkin placed the petition online and you can sign it here. From Mr. Kalkin:
Hey Everyone,

As you know the Roosevelt Island Post Office may be closing. I have been going out getting paper signatures with many of you, but I thought it would be good to make an online version of the same petition to distribute to everyone as well. Please sign the petition, email the link to your friends/buildings email lists,  post the petition link to FACEBOOK and TWITTER as well. We need to get a lot of signatures.

Here is the link to the petition, Sign and Pass on!
Roosevelt Island Operating Corp (RIOC) President Leslie Torres announced during the protest rally that petitions will be made available at the RIOC offices (591 Main Street) as well.

As concerned Roosevelt Island residents said today - SAVE OUR POST OFFICE!!!!

UPDATE 6 PM - Mr. Kalkin and Roosevelt Island Residents Association (RIRA) President Matt Katz urge Roosevelt Islanders to sign the petition to save Roosevelt Island Post Office.

NYC City Council Member Jessica Lappin issued the following statement regarding today's rally:
Our message today is signed, sealed and delivered—save Roosevelt Island’s post office. The Postal Service needs to look beyond the distance on a map, at the unique needs of this community
Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney's office sends the following statement too:
Today, U.S. Rep. Carolyn Maloney, State Senator José M. Serrano, Assembly Member Micah Kellner, City Council Member Jessica Lappin, Roosevelt Island Operating Corporation President Leslie Torres, Roosevelt Island Residents Association President Matthew Katz, Chuck Zlatkin of the American Postal Workers Union, and Roosevelt Island community leaders and residents rallied outside the Roosevelt Island Station to urge the United States Postal Service to keep open the only post office located on Roosevelt Island.  Maloney and her fellow elected officials and community members have collected more than 1,600 signatures from Roosevelt Islanders who want to keep their post office open for business, and plan on delivering the petitions to the Postal Service later this week.

At today’s event, Maloney also urged Islanders to reach out to the Postal Service directly, and issued the following list of actions people can take to save Roosevelt Island Station:

WHAT YOU CAN DO TO SAVE YOUR POST OFFICE

□       Sign a petition, or create one that your neighbors and friends can sign, urging the Postal Service to keep Roosevelt Island Station open.

Petitions can be sent to:
Mr. Patrick Donahoe
U.S. Postmaster General
475 L’Enfant Plaza West, SW
Washington, DC 20260

□       Write a letter to Postmaster Donahoe (at the address above);
Call the Postal Service at 1-800-275-8777 (Open Monday to Saturday); or

□       Contact the USPS via the methods above and request a public hearing, so that USPS officials can hear your views in person.

In July, the Postal Service announced that it was studying the possibility of closing Roosevelt Island Station and 3,652 other post offices nationwide. The USPS placed Roosevelt Island Station on its list of potential closures because Roosevelt Island Station had less than $600,000 in revenue last year, and there are more than 15 alternate postal “access points” within a ten-mile radius. However, as Maloney and others argued today, Roosevelt Island is home to many seniors and persons with disabilities who could not walk to the next-nearest post office nearly a mile-and-a-half away in Queens, and the only other postal “access point” on the Island itself is a Duane Reade that sells stamps – hardly a substitute for a full post office. A final decision on which post offices will be closed is expected later this year.

Earlier this month, Maloney and her fellow elected officials wrote to U.S. Postmaster General Patrick R. Donahoe urging him to keep Roosevelt Island Station open, and requesting that USPS hold a public hearing on the potential closure so affected New Yorkers could express their views. A copy of that letter follows.

“As the name suggests, Roosevelt Island is an island. The post office has identified alternate post offices in a ten-mile radius – but other than a Duane Reade that sells stamps, all the other alternatives are located across the East River, a swift-moving body of water. While I love the people of Roosevelt Island, they can’t walk on water, so they won’t be able to walk to the next-closest branch,” said Maloney.

“Roosevelt Island Station serves residents of a community with many senior citizens, persons with disabilities, and Section 8 recipients. The island was specifically designed to be virtually car-free and, indeed, very few residents of this community own cars. Almost all postal customers using Roosevelt Island Station walk there – or use wheelchairs,” Maloney added. “So, today, we are asking to Postal Service to look at the needs of this neighborhood, the nature of the customer base here on Roosevelt Island, and the long distances people will have to travel by foot to reach the nearest alternate postal facility – and conclude, as we have, that this vital community post office must remain open for business. Save our post office!”

"Access to a post office is a right that most New Yorkers take for granted, and it is inconceivable that such a right might now be taken away from the people who live on Roosevelt Island. I am proud to join with Rep. Carolyn Maloney and many other elected officials, community leaders and residents today in urging the United States Postal Service to keep open the only such office serving this important community. Forcing residents to walk one and a half miles to the next nearest post office, in Queens, is no solution at all -- not for seniors, not for persons with disabilities, or anyone else who lives on Roosevelt Island,” said Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer.

State Senator José M. Serrano said, “Closing the only post office on Roosevelt Island simply does not make sense. For the most vulnerable Island residents, traveling to Astoria or Manhattan to drop off mail is clearly not an option. I urge the United States Postal Service to ensure that the Roosevelt Island Post Office remain open for business, as its closure would deeply inconvenience all those living and working on the island.”

“Under this plan the US Postal Service literally expects Roosevelt Islanders to walk on water to get their mail,” said Assembly Member Kellner. “But Islanders shouldn’t need a miracle to keep this post office open.”

"Our message is signed, sealed and delivered -- keep Roosevelt Island Station open," said Council Member Jessica Lappin.

"Roosevelt Island is a small town community that relies on the services of the USPS every day," said Leslie Torres, President of the Roosevelt Island Corporation. "Closing the only station on the island will create an incredible hardship especially on the elderly and disabled residents that use the station for their everyday postal needs."

“The Roosevelt Island Post Office serves a special population in a planned community that includes a significant number of low-income residents, seniors and the disabled, who should not have to take public transportation to visit a post office. In addition, we host an international population of diplomats, United Nations and foreign mission workers with specialized postal needs requiring full post office services. We can’t walk to the next nearest station; we are an island surrounded by water. Swimming for stamps is not an option,” said Matthew Katz, President of the Roosevelt Island Residents Association.

COALITION OF ELECTED OFFICIALS OF ROOSEVELT ISLAND, NY

c/o Congresswoman Carolyn B. Maloney

1651 Third Avenue, New York, NY 10128

August 12, 2011

Mr. Patrick R. Donahoe

Postmaster General

US Postal Service

475 L’Enfant Plaza West, SW

Washington, DC 20260

Dear Mr. Donahoe:

We write to you as elected officials representing constituents using the Roosevelt Island Station Post Office located at 694 Main Street, New York, NY 10044. It is our understanding that the United States Postal Service (USPS) will begin a study for potential consolidation (closure) of Roosevelt Island Station. Closing this facility would severely burden residents living in the area who rely on it for their daily needs.

Roosevelt Island Station is the only postal facility located on Roosevelt Island, which is surrounded on all sides by the East River, a swift-moving body of water. The island is connected to Manhattan by subway and tram, and to Queens by a vehicular and pedestrian bridge. It serves residents of a community with many senior citizens, persons with disabilities and Section 8 recipients. Unlike most parts of the country, a significant number of residents of this community do not own cars, and almost all postal customers using Roosevelt Island Station walk there.

To reach an alternative post office, residents would have to take a subway or a tram to Manhattan, or walk a mile and a half into Queens. For Islanders, a trip to the post office would take at least a half an hour each way if they choose to go by subway or tram, or more than 45 minutes each way if they choose to walk. For the significant number of seniors and disabled people living on the island, a trip to the post office would become impracticable. In evaluating the efficacy of closing this facility, we hope that you will look at the unique conditions on Roosevelt Island. Simply measuring a distance on a map tells you very little about the ease or difficulty of reaching the destination.

We have heard the suggestion that many postal services can be accessed by computer. The population around Roosevelt Island Station includes large numbers of senior citizens and economically disadvantaged person who do not have computers and therefore do not use email or pay bills online.

We believe that the USPS would lose a significant amount of revenue if it were to close Roosevelt Island Station. Although Roosevelt Island itself is similar to small towns in the number of retail outlets, the island is part of a large urban area with many alternative providers. There is no guarantee that Roosevelt Island Station customers will simply transfer their business to another USPS outlet. Federal Express, United Parcel Service, DHL, and similar private mail or package delivery service do pick up. Further, customers wishing to purchase a postal order can easily get a money order through the local bank.

We hope that you will look at the realities of this neighborhood, the nature of Roosevelt Island Station’s customer base and the long distance people will have to travel to reach a different post office. For all of the foregoing reasons, we urge you to keep Roosevelt Island Station open. We would like to meet with you, or the District Manager/Postmaster of the New York District, William J. Schnaars, to discuss these concerns further. Additionally, we hope that you will hold a public hearing to allow our constituents to express their views to you.

Sincerely,

CAROLYN B. MALONEY
Member of Congress

Scott STRINGER
Borough President Manhattan

Jose Serrano
State Senator

Micah Kellner
Member of Assembly

Jessica Lappin
City Council Member

To play devil's advocate if they keep RI USPS open as is, somewhere else will probably lose their post office.  The amount of revenue brought in by the office is likely not going to increase as there are far cheaper and better ways to ship in New York (i.e., USPS service is generally only better than other methods in rural areas).  So even if they keep it open now, they will likely close it later anyways.
Realize the USPS is running a budget deficit of 8 billion a year, costing each and everyone of us $25 per year, costing the entire island nearly $300K/yr.     Has anyone looked into luring a village post office to the island?  That would essential appease most of those who say they can't live without the USPS on the island since the village office can do everything at a fraction of the cost.   It could be put in the new Trader Joes they are going to bring to the island...

The USPS deserves to be shut down...why? Because the competition is less expensive, offers much better personal service and faster shipping.  The USPS office in this island is worked by aging men that are grumpy as hell, and do nothing but complain about customers who were in there filing for passports and other customers who were too slow to fill out their forms and several other things that would astonish those that actually cared.  Honestly, the old white men with the gray hair just need to retire.  There are two young black folks, (one woman and one young man) that are super speedy and quick, and also super nice.  I can understand that after working 20+ years at a government job with the best health and retirement plans this land has ever seen, they would be lazy and grumpy within a couple years of their retirement, however, it affects the islanders - people like me - when we go to mail a package.  The line is crazy long, they take stupid long lunch breaks, and their attitudes are so below par from other competitors or other USPS offices it's embarrassing. I'm OK and I support the closing of the USPS on this Island.  They are too far in debt, and we will pay the costs through taxes to bring them out.  Also, we will pay higher fees in shipping.  Bring FedEx, UPS and or DHL to this island, and competition will drive prices lower and will NOT affect our taxes!

I see from other posts that Tsuyoshi appears to have a problem with African Americans, and in his post referencing the US Postal Service employees, White Americans.  I'm assuming Tsuyoshi probably hates Latinos as well.  Tsuyoshi, has it ever occurred to you that American, in all its wonderful diversity, encompassing all colors, cultures, ages, sexual orientations, and on and on, just might not be the place for you if you cannot handle it?  Which is a shame, since the contributions of Japanese  Americans are as wonderful and manifold as those of everyone else in our great country.  Another thing:  Before you sneer at government employees slogging away at mostly thankless, boring jobs, but jobs which are nonetheless necessary, remember that there are millions of other government "employees" - those called soldiers - thankfully most of the time they are not "actively" in combat but are quietly manning outposts in some faraway country or another, or completing a tour of duty in a nuclear sub or aircraft carrier on the high seas; so even if they are not constantly in the front lines of battle, they are crucial to our country's security, the security which gives you the freedom to voice your opinion about your neighbors and our postal workers.  So, next time, think again about the benefits of being an American, which entails respecting and embracing the differences of your neighbors, as well as the Federal employees that keep our country going.  All of us have our role to play, something to contribute in a positive way to society.  For the 44 cents it takes to send a letter via First Class Mail vs the $12 or so via Fedex or UPS - hey, I'll take the US Postal Service any time!

Hey little Kitty, you do know the topic of this post right? USPS. Not the US Army, or any other US government entity.  Please, stay on topic.  If you would like to get into a discussion about the US Army, then start another post.  I was in the peace corps, and later joined the US Army and served in Desert Storm.  I'm half Mexican and half Japanese, and my wife is from South Korea. My mother is from Osaka, Japan and my father is from Chihuahua, Mexico.  I was born in South Central Los Angeles, and lived in 8 different countries.  I've experienced and embraced, loved and fought for more races and people then you've ever laid on eyes on.  Before you go pointing your finger around spewing the incredibly ignorant defaming typed words you have done thus far, do yourself a favor and try thinking before hand.  You know nothing of this world.  Stay local. Don't try to become international, it clearly shows it's utterly useless.  P.S. I don't respect any human being that talks crap behind other peoples back, and gossips about others, especially paying customers.  I'm specifically referring to the beloved federal employees your talking about, rather the ones on our island at the USPS office.  Also, if you would have noticed in my post, I clearly stated that the two African American employees on the islands USPS office were the BEST employees there.  I said, "super speedy and quick, and also super nice." Reread what I typed! Unreal.

I see you like to generalize, and huddle all races, sexes, sexual orientation, cultures, and entire groups of people into specific categories.  Is that really how you view people living around you? You see, this is the problem when you don't have the same multi-cultural experiences as others do.  You're clearly not embracing ethnic individuality, and have an obvious, hideous bad habit of generalizing and categorizing humans like cattle. Unlike you and your twisted mindset, I do not do that, nor associate myself with human scum like you that look at people in such terrible light in which you've been doing so much of in your sickening hard hearted comments.  So what do you think about people of different religion? I'm curious to know how racist and discriminating you can really be....please, do share because your true colors are bursting through for all to see.

While I speak about individuals and point out individuals faults, you continue to huddle entire races into examination as a whole.  This island doesn't need nor deserve racist individuals like you.  My neighbors in my building and fellow buildings deserve so much more then your sickening, twisted, perverted ideology. Do you cross the street when you see an Asian/Black/Latino man or woman walking in your direction? Have you tried speaking to people of other religions? Have you made friends with someone who's gay? Try it...reach out...say hello to us.  Say hi to a fellow islander who is of different color/religion/sexual orientation.

Grow up...

Tsuyoshi - I forgive your angry rant - how can you possibly write such things about someone you have never met and know nothing about?  I am not a racist but I am afraid you have shown some unfortunate tendencies in that direction, especially in a terrible rant you posted trying to imitate African American slang. That was a terrible, hurtful post to everyone in the African American community.

And in your post referencing the older white American postal employee, you displayed what could be interpreted as ageism.

In addition, I hope you find it in your heart to apologize for your postings re Morris, a poster from Eastwood.

So please consider apologizing to Morris, the African American community, and the older postal employee.

Our community is comprised of people of all backgrounds, ages, ethnicity etc. and I pray you find it in your heart to consider  apologizing here to all of the groups you may have offended.  As I wrote above, I forgive you - since you could not possibly write offensive things about someone you do not know, all of your thoughts in that context can only be considered an aberration.  Tsuyoshi - try to find the positive in people, be they older folks, African American neighbors, or even posters like Morris, because as long as you stay here, RI will be filled with wonderful older folks and African Americans, as well as wonderful people from all other backgrounds!

How marvelous it must be to be Tsuyoshi - secure in his heroic standing as the defender of democracy.

Tsuyoshi, I note you have not apologized to Morris, and instead continue to issue threats to "report him to the authorities" - for what?  Commenting on a blog forum?  Frankly, he should sue you for threatening him online!  That is, if that were possible - which, it isn't.

Also, you have not retracted your malicious comments about African Americans, delivered in your rendition, which was -- dare I say it - racist, version of African American slang.  I suggest help - get help Tsuyoshi.

Anyway, there's no point in pursuing the thread any longer.  Oh, and Morris?  He is very calm and without any concern vis-a-vis your canards.  That's in stark contrast to your expostulations...

Now you're just trying to be cute, Kitty. The sad thing about this is, you continue to ignore the words I am typing about culture.  You continue to ignore the very fact at hand, that the person you're talking to is multicultural, love his cultural neighbors, and has multicultural kids.  Your last stand of pointing fingers of racism has dwindled and expired.  I'll continue to, and forever prove you wrong.  Your self-absorbed hatred towards others will continue to shine through for everyone to see.  I will still say hi to you, and smile and hold to door open to you when we meet in the afternoons/evenings, as I always have and will. I don't hold a grudge towards you, but I do fault you for your racist comments and attitudes towards people like me and my wife and kids.  Just because we're of Asian decent, does not mean you can attack us for being of different color.

That you should apologize for...for my family and the many other Asian families moving in.

Now, about Morris.  Morris, committed welfare fraud.  He said, and I QUOTE (as I've kept a record/copy of his statements for legal purposes) " i love living off the  taxpayers like you , see i hope you and all the
new people who have moved to this island willing to pay these high rents
.i been here  when it was for low and middle income  but no more . they
put me into sec8 .so now i must play  the hand that was given to me .
and so that means i cannot make a high income because then i will lose
my sec8  than i must pay the market rent of  the apartment in which i
can not do ,, and i dont want to move so its better for me to lose my
job. this way  i can stay in sec 8. which means i can stay in my
apatment .thats the way it is in eastwood unless you have a  lap
apartment." - said Morris.

That's one of six comments he left of blog admitting to welfare fraud.  Those I've saved and shared with the federal agent I've been in contact with.

Guess what Kitty? I confronted Morris because he was and is cheating the system. If you're supportive of him, and embedding Morris, then I will report you as well.  I have your IP address, and I will report you for embedding to the Fed's.  Make no mistake about it, Morris has committed a federal offense publicly/  Why do you think he hasn't ever left another comment? He's shaking in his boots waiting for the Fed's to knock on his door, if he hasn't already been dragged off to prison.

Kitty, you stepped on the wrong feet this time.  I'll expose you for who you really are to the Main Street Wire, and the Federal Authorities just like I did to Morris.  Morris is done and dealt with.  He's been scamming the system and the Fed's know and have already launched an investigation because of his actions.  Because of your support for a federal criminal, I'll pass along your IP address and location to the agent I'm in contact with and let them know you're aiding and embedding. I've also kept a log of your actions and will share with them your info.

While you continue to try and push a racial agenda, I make y stand and claim by fighting against those that are committing crimes.  Morris did, and now that you're involved, you're illegally committing fraud.

See ya Kitty.  It was nice passing you along the hallways, doing laundry together and sharing the elevators.  But in all honesty, I don't stand by people that commit crimes.

Come Monday morning, I'll notify the agent I'm in contact with of your IP address and let them deal with you as well.  Morris is done.  He's a soon to be registered criminal for welfare fraud. And my agent with know of you as well.

Hey Tamagachi, are you competing with Ms. Raye "psycho" Schwartz? Or maybe Ms. Judy "I lost my" Byrde?

You are rambling like a maniac now.

The post office is NOT TAXPAYER FUNDED, and never has been since it's inception.

Yes, they employees get benefits but it is all self funded and the post office is ran like a business, not a government entity. It is like a Fed-Ex, with U.S. in front of it.

You must also stop typing so eloquent, as it makes you sound more dumb than smart. You are trying to show off your "education" on a public blog. It's not working, nor impressive. You come off as a grumpy AM radio personality, like a Rush Limbaghl type, perhaps you are tying to go in MSNBC as a tv rambler personality?. Speak minimal and you sound less foolish.

Tsuyoshi, that's fine.  Please pass my information along to the authorities - I have nothing to hide and nothing to be ashamed of.  And neither does Morris.  But you do - because you absolutely did post a malicious rant supposedly "imitating" African American slang - that you never apologized for.  In addition, you continue to state you are going to refer Morris - and now me - absurdly enough - to the authorities.  In fact, if you read Morris' post closely, he hasn't admitted to Welfare Fraud, as you put it.  He is merely stating a fact of the Sec 8 system - there is a criterion whereby someone making too much money is then ineligible to receive Sec 8 benefits.   Morris says that he wants to retain the benefits and so will quit his position if he needs to in order to find a lower-paying job, so that he is not rendered ineligible.  There's nothing fraudulent about that - if anything, it's a sad commentary on the state of affairs of our system that someone would have to do such a thing since otherwise they could no longer afford the rather inflated market rate rent.  There's nothing fraudulent about quitting a job, taking any other job, etc etc.  Why do you think my comments referring to Morris represent my aiding and abetting Morris - which in itself is an absurdity since Morris hasn't done a thing wrong?  Since when do blog comments for or against someone or something count for anything other than blog comments?  I will be happy if the authorities do contact me since I will definitely refer them to your ridiculous, threatening comments, although I doubt if anybody in a position of authority will even bother to follow up on your "reporting" of me or Morris.  They will just think you are another psycho, as Goatfish cogently notes above.  :)

With the internet being an ever expanding network of knowledge and consumer sites, it is becoming easier for people to find exactly what they need without having to traipse around town centres or flicking through a phone book.
