Power Cleaning Of Roosevelt Island Waterfront Promenade Entrance Near Southtown Riverwalk Restaurant Garbage Dumpster - More Needs To Be Done

Image of Power Cleaning On Promenade Next To Southtown Restaurant Garbage Dumpster

Reported last Tuesday on the Southtown Riverwalk restaurant garbage dumpster causing an ugly, stinking mess and leaking waste on the waterfront promenade:
... Island residents have been complaining regarding the amount of litter and vermin that is visible and present on the promenade near Starbucks. Strollers, joggers and walkers must pass through this litter'soup' to get to the promenade...
Roosevelt Island Residents Association (RIRA) Planning Committee Chair Frank Farance referred to the waterfront promenade's entrance as:
It's like Roosevelt Island's own Yellow Brick Road begins with smelly dumpster juice and a trail of dumpster giblets.

Yes, it is disgusting and they need to do something about it...
The Southtown owner's representative from Hudson/Related, Andrew Jackson, responded to the restaurant garbage problem later on Tuesday:
... I wasn’t aware the garbage area was a mess but we will get it cleaned asap....
Last Friday, some heavy duty power cleaning was taking place on the promenade area adjacent to the Garbage Dumpster.

When the cleaning was finished, this is what the area looked like on Saturday.

UPDATE 9:55 PM - A Roosevelt Island resident adds:
The area is still stained. fyi they used acids to clean the really oily part that looked like an oil slick (cooking oil I think) anyway it still isn't clean and the guys washing it said that they can try some more acid. Acid? ok so they will pour acid in this area where the strollers and dogs run? is that healthy? safe? c'mon..

As soon as possible Related can tackle the dumpster outside M&D Deli. As the new landlord of the Deli, I hope they enforce clean Main Street including the dumpster, the dirty news box outside the Candy store and the junk outside the cleaner.

Vinegar is an acid, too, and it is used for all kinds of cleaning. They do all their best to clean up that mess and people are STILL complaining, especially without anybody finding out what kind of acid they are using? Don't fall for buzz words. (Ohhhh, Acid... must be dangerous).

Here Here!  I agree with you! RIOC has allowed these vendors and stores to keep a nasty area, I am tired of it...

It's the ground. It's dirty. Do you let your children get out of their strollers and lick the street?

The number 1 thing that could be done to immediately make the island more livable would be the power-cleaning of Motorgate - including the windows.  This is an impressive structure - a match to the subway station - that is covered with grime.  Why can't the state figure out a way to maintain this structure properly?  Commercial buildings with similar windows in Manhattan have contractors come in with scaffolding to wash windows that are even more difficult to reach.  There are professional safe ways to clean windows/spaces in structures like Motorgate.  But RIOC & the State of NY insist on nickel-&-dime-ing us - I have never once in all the years I've lived here seen a scaffold at Motorgate tackling the windows.

I'm not even going to discuss the  escalator which was finally given up on and enclosed in plywood - as if it's undergoing repair - which it isn't.

I could care less if there are motor or cooking oil stains on pavement - this you see everywhere even in the "cleanest" or most expensive suburbs.  Nobody cares about stains on pavement.  It's expected if people are parking their cars or trucks in the street etc.  This is what happens if you have commercial activity such as operating a restaurant.  Look at Chinatown - vibrant, buzzing with commercial activity - and thankfully, still gritty.  Nobody cares about the grittiness since it goes with the commercial "frenzy".

The one thing RIOC could do now to improve the quality of life on RI is to hire a professional scaffolding company to clean Motorgate and then continue to do so let's say on an annual basis.  However much it costs - if they can't afford it - put it to a local vote.  I am sure we will have many here who will kick in to pay for the cleanup.

Well that's what I'm worried about, sorta.  When you walk in it, you track it back home into your apartment - yuk! Ditto for strollers rolling through it.  Double ditto for kids balls rolling in it, which wind up on the living room floor, on the couch, pillows, and face. You'd be surprised how much the stuff on the street comes in contact with our eyes, mouth, and face.  Can't avoid it, but can minimize it.

If you have animals, you are aware of this, too: in winter you keep your shoes in the hall when they put salt on the snow.

Sure, one can't expect every sidewalk to be perfectly cleaned, but you avoid stepping in dog poop for *some* reason, right?  So let's keep the dumpster juice and dumpster giblets in the dumpster and, hopefully, less yuk that we have to walk through.

I agree, the escalator is an "eye sore".  If you're not going to fix it - get rid of it.  Use the space for something else, like a flower shop or something.
