Did you live on Roosevelt Island at that time? What was it like?

Close- we came here in 1982 and it was great- no Subway yet and Westview was the newest Building on Main St. at 5 years old. It was super quiet- lots of empty, beautiful fields, a real, close- knit community the worked together and a mix of middle class, working class, the UN, families, singles, seniors. It really felt small town and country- like then and so reminded me of my Grandmother's backyard in the Berkshires. We moved here from E. 92nd Street and Second Ave. when we couldn't find another affordable apt. in Manhattan in 7/82. My two Sisters were on the Circle Line and looked over here. We had seen the Aerial Tram go up when we were in H.S. at Julia Richman and I said I would never go on it- fear of heights.
Still love it- but so changed... Still proud of the title of "Roosevelt Island" after FDR- we heard when we moved here how a Memorial was being built on the southern end to FDR and Eleanor.
You could ride your bike both north and south past all the empty, great fields.
There was a great old Nursing Quarters Building where the Subway is now and a huge, empty, soccer- softball field where the Southtown Buildings now stand.
There was another huge empty field where the last new Southtown Building stands- I used to cut across it all the time on the way home from the Tram.
We had the schools right on our ground floors in Westview, Island House- now all in the School Building together...
We had great pizza, a great Chinese place with white tablecloths, service, a shoe cobbler, and ice cream shop, the Stationery store sold frozen custard, but even then Sloan- now Gristede's was overpriced, etc.
The Grog shop was great and we had the red bus right in front of there- I used to take it to go to my swims in Sporstpark..
So many things were different.
When we came- the Marketing Slogan was "Safe Affordable Housing for Everyone".
Island House and Westview Tenant Associations worked together and there were transfers between both buildings...
I lived there from 76 till 82. LOVED it!! Made friends for life!!! We ruled the Island! I saw a few friends in this video! RI is still a great place to live but was even better back in the day!
Yes the good old days before rioc gave into the rich building owners.those days are far gone. Now its for the kind of people who live in southtown and octagon.
It brings back memories. The island was a different place. The community watched out for each other. But now no more. Rioc let it all get away for money
I've lived here since 1976. We moved here so that our child could go to public school and intended to move back to Manhattan proper after 8th grade graduation, but skyrocketing housing costs prevented our doing so. Businesses would come and go; but shopping was always a problem, although much, much better than it has been for the past few years. We had a passable wine store; you could run down a get a simple bottle for dinner if you had to. The major difference between then and now was that I had hope that the island would change for the better. I hated the feeling that real New York was so close and so far away. As it is know, it's neither the city, nor the suburbs. It's just a blah nowhereville. I've lived here long enough to know that plus ca change, plus c'est la meme chose, so, while I'm again hopeful that Cornell will bring something positive to the island, I'm also realistic (and too old to be able to benefit from the fully built-out campus, when that finally happens.)
I lived there from 76 to 93 I could write forever I still refer it to as home . Life time friends some have passed but still rememberd by all of us ...it was the model of " it takes a village to raise a child "
Roosevelt Island is a mixed income, racially diverse waterfront community situated in the East River of New York City between Manhattan and Queens and is jurisdictionally part of Manhattan. The Roosevelt Island Tramway, which connects Roosevelt Island to the rest of Manhattan, has become the iconic symbol of Roosevelt Island to its residents.
The Purpose of this Blog is to provide accurate and timely information about Roosevelt Island as well as a forum for residents to express opinions and engage in a dialogue to improve our community.

Love the fact that the Red Bus was already electrical. Anybody can comment on that? Was it working well, or was it constantly broken?
The good old days of affordable housing.but no more.roosevelt island is for people with money.
Do people in southtown and octagon give their nannies memorial day off. We on the island need to. Know
