RIRA Manhattan Park Delegate Seeking Con Ed Electricity Usage Infomation - Please Help, It's in Your Interest To Do So

RIRA Common Council Meeting

Manhattan Park RIRA Common Council Delegate Perez-Cruz sends the following message:
Dear all,

Manhattan Park residents have 8 elected representatives to the Roosevelt Island Residents Association (RIRA). We were elected on the 2nd November election. However, practically nobody knows us and therefore cannot air any concerns through us. Residents are not informed either of the RIRA monthly meetings and of what is in the agenda.

I want to encourage all the elected common council members to make their contact info available to the people that elected them. I want to inform people of what RIRA is doing, has been doing and is planning to do. Manhattan Park Management has told me that I cannot post my information on the designated areas of the building, so there are few channels to use to connect residents. This blog is one of them.

By the way, we had the second RIRA meeting yesterday December 3, were Chairs to RIRA committees where chosen. The chairs of there
committees are:
Social, Cultural and Educational Services: Nikki Leopold
Island services: Aaron Hamburger
Planning: Mat Katz
Government relations: Margie Smith
Communications: Elizabeth Erickson
Public Safety: Ron Schuppert
Housing: Lynne Strong-Shinozaki AND Joyce Mincheff

Talk to your neighbors about the blog, stay tuned to get informed on
Island and MP issues.
Ms. Perez-Cruz is particularly concerned with the electricity costs at Manhattan Park.
I do not know how many people (if any) have requested to see their meter readings on electricity. But so far, all people I have contacted find their winter bills excessive. To request measurements of electricity would be a good start. The beginning of this is the high bill we get evidenced by their winter-sky rocketing. Is there anyone out there that have numbers to share with the rest of us?
If any Manhattan Park resident would like to share their Con Ed electricity bill information in order to compare them with others, a Google Group for Manhattan Park has been established.

I have also created separate groups for:
Groups for Octagon and Eastwood (Roosevelt Landings) will be done shortly.

What info should we collect? How many kWh were used or how much was charged per kWh? The first is pretty much useless as a number to compare because we all have different apartment sizes and power consumptions. If we request access to the meters from management we can compare the numbers on the bill and the actual numbers on the meter and report any discrepancies. The latter would be more interesting to compare in order to see if some folks get charged more than others (I doubt that this is the case, though). I'll post some info from our last 6 bills or so later today. We should probably compare the cost of 1 kWh over time in different seasons. Electricity is always more expensive during winters and summers due to the higher demand.

Luckily, there is a resident that has experience in this matter since he has worked in submettering companies in Manhattan. He has contacted me and has already made a suggestion on how to proceed. I want to suggest getting several residents willing to share their electrical bills and WILLING to complain if necessary, because we will need some information released from Management. Are you on board? If so, please contact me at roosevelt.island.ny@gmail.com and let me know if your immediate neighbors face the same question about the bills (mine so)

I am an energy consultant. I came across your blog and would like to ask some questions. ConEdison's rates change monthly, and, yes, rates are always higher during the summer months. It sounds as if residents are billed by the landlord for their electricity usage. Is this a correct assumption? If so, is the landlord using ConEdison for their supply, or have they signed with a third party supplier? If the latter is true, you need to know that while there are suppliers out there that overcharge their customers for electricity and gas. On the other hand, there are lots of suppliers that are saving their customers money.
Feel free to comment or discuss your concerns.
