Planning On Moving To Or From Roosevelt Island In Near Future? Consider Using Rented Plastic Bins Instead Of Cardboard Boxes To Pack Your Stuff

Are you planning on moving to or from Roosevelt Island? Not happy with the prospect of searching for and using cardboard boxes in which to pack your stuff? Consider an alternative to cardboard moving boxes by using rented plastic stackable bins. According to Bin-it:
Why is Bin-It the smart move?
It's no secret that moving is stressful, from finding a new place to settling in and everything in between. The actual physical process of moving your stuff from one place to the other can be the biggest drag of all, and it's definitely the least fun. When you Bin-It, you save hours of strain and frustration. We show up with stackable plastic bins, ready with labels for easy labeling. You pack them up, swiftly close the attached lids, load in your vehicle, and drive away. When you've finished unpacking, call or text us to come pick up the bins. You're done!

According to article in today's NY Times:
...  Bin-It and a similar service, Jugglebox Moving, have recently entered the New York moving market. Both deliver stacks of sturdy boxes and pick them up after the move is complete.

The boxes can be ordered online or by phone. Bin-It’s price for a one-bedroom move, with 25 boxes, is $109 plus a $30 service fee. At Jugglebox, a one-bedroom move with 35 boxes is $129. Other necessities, including wardrobe boxes, packing paper, labels and dollies, are available from each service....
I have not moved recently and have never used this company but I thought it might be a useful alternative to anyone who is moving in the near future.

I just moved, and looked at both these options.  Even though they get the bins back (and require delivery fees, etc), they were still more expensive than buying new cardboard.  It seems like a good idea, but the pricing is too steep (Jugglebox claims 50% cheaper, but I struggled to find any savings by using them).  There's also the issue of having another move-out.  It's no big deal to toss a bunch of cardboard in my building, but I suspect I'd have to schedule use of the service elevator to have these boxes picked up.

I eventually went with http://citymovingboxes.com - it cost just over $100 for 25 boxes of varying sizes (including a few massive ones for linens/pillows) and 3 wardrobes.

Wow, 120+ bucks to rent plastic boxes... riiiiiight. Last move I did (to RI), I was able to easily get all of the boxes to move my 1BR for free. Seriously, why pay for cardboard when -every- retailer is throwing out tons of them. Anyways, I would probably pay 20-40 bucks tops to 'rent' plastic boxes, otherwise, wtf is the point since the card board can be recycled ?

Mark Lyon - even if it's no big deal to you to toss a bunch of cardboard in your building, it's a big deal to the planet. Recycling and reducing your carbon footprint is awesome.

Often, the less wasteful option costs more - I've seen this with the diaper services in the city as well.

Well, as I said, you can simply recycle the cardboard - it is not being wasteful at all.

Right.  The boxes tossed in the building go to recycling.

Using new boxes for my move allowed me to use fewer boxes and the more uniform sizes helped to make the move easier.  I've done the "collect the boxes" type of move many times; this was far easier.  It also eliminated any concerns about bringing any unwelcome pests (bedbugs, etc) from whatever random source had available boxes. We listed our boxes for free on Craigslist once we'd finished unpacking.  Nobody wanted to come to RI and pick them up, though.

Yeah, my last move I did it more for the fun of finding boxes, but when you can buy them brand new from say Home Depot for very cheap, it basically makes the free boxes cost more via time and effort ;)

But, I think we are both in agreement that these plastic boxes don't really make sense at all, and probably cost as much as renting/buying boxes from the movers themselves (which are crazy expensive).

id imagine you're paying more for the convenience.  i guess it all comes down to how much you value your time and how much your care about waste.
in a city that charges for everything, for a couple extra bucks to not lift a finger to get boxes, ill try it out!
