Roosevelt Island July 4 Fireworks Viewing Celebration Online Registration For 1500 Tickets At FDR Four Freedoms Park Sold Out In Minutes Today, Same As Ever - Did You Get Tickets?

As reported July 2021:

Many Roosevelt Island residents are outraged over the way the Roosevelt Island Operating Corp (RIOC) handled last Wednesday's online ticket registration for viewing the July 4 Macy's Fireworks Celebration at FDR Four Freedoms Park....

Every year as July 4 gets closer, like clockwork, Roosevelt Island residents look forward to viewing the Macy's East River Fireworks celebration at FDR Four Freedoms Park. Residents try to register for the limited number of tickets available through the Roosevelt Island Operating Corp (RIOC) online system only to find out the free tickets are no longer available within minutes (sometimes seconds) as happened again today.

1500 tickets were available this year for viewing the July 4 Fireworks at FDR Four Freedoms Park. According to RIOC:

Registration for the Roosevelt Island Fourth of July Family Fireworks Celebration will be opening, Wednesday, June 29th, at 12 PM for residents. Don’t miss out on the opportunity to register for advanced tickets. If any tickets remain, they will be released to the public on Friday, July 1st 12 PM ...

A few minutes after 12 PM today, I started receiving emails like this:

We logged on at 12:00 for tickets today. Gone. Do you think they sold out to residents in two minutes?
and:
I was online at 12 and after giving all the info clicking 4 tickets the sight said that I couldn’t get them with my code.  It’s amazing how they can’t get anything right.
A Roosevelt Island Mom of 2 shares this message she sent to RIOC:
Dear RIOC Board and staff,

This was a terrible experience. We logged in one minute before 12 and tried constantly to get even one ticket for our family of four. It just kept saying no tickets available even when refreshing the page, clearing history, trying different browsers, etc. And at some point it said that even the code would not be valid. We think we did everything right and are now left with zero tickets for our family for the “family celebration”. We extra delayed our summer travel because our children wanted to see the fireworks. Many families have the same frustrating experience, as just shared on the Roosevelt Island Parents’ Network. Very sad.

Please if you can release more tickets to Roosevelt Island families and residents. Thank you.
Some residents were able to get tickets.  According to this comment from Roosevelt Islander Facebook Page:
Heh. In all fairness -- since last year I was one of the people complaining about how I couldn't get a ticket despite trying at the exact time, I'll just say -- this year I *was* able to get tickets off eventbrite. I honestly assumed it was better for everyone... but looks like I just lucked out. Hope they expand it next year.
Another Facebook Page comment:
I have been trying since noon and nothing. I was prompted to get on the waitlist. I am also in a group chat with 16 other residents all trying to get tickets and none of them were able to get tickets either.

if you ask me, it is a total PR stunt to make it look like they tried to give residents access to their own community

And

I have been checking and checking since 11:59 to 12:05, it’s unavailable all the time

 And:

Tried since noon then after 10 minutes it said unavailable then it said sold out, this isn’t the first year this has happened

Here are more comments from Roosevelt Islander Instagram Page.

I asked RIOC today:
Any comment from RIOC on today's July 4 online Ticket Registration process.

I'm receiving many reports from angry residents who logged on at 12 PM and were not able to get tickets.

For example:
We logged on at 12:00 for tickets today. Gone. Do you think they sold out to residents in two minutes?

and:

Year after year it’s a debacle

Any comments from RIOC?
No reply from RIOC.

Macy's July 4, 2022 Fireworks On East River - Roosevelt Island Will Have Great Views But Will RIOC Handle The Fireworks Ticket Lottery Registration For Viewing At Four Freedoms Park Any Better Than Previous Years?

Roosevelt Island is one of the best spots to view the Macy's July 4 Fireworks Celebration when the launch barges are located on the East River north of the Williamsburg Bridge as they have been for the last few years.

Take a look.

During the May 24 Roosevelt Island Residents Association (RIRA) Public Safety Committee meeting, Roosevelt Island Operating Corp (RIOC) Public Safety Department Chief Kevin Brown reported:

... we will have july 4th on the east river and we're we're planning for it right now...

Chief Brown did not say if the fireworks barges would be staged close to Roosevelt Island or further south by the Brooklyn Bridge but the LIC Post reported yesterday:
Long Island City residents will once again get a close-up view of the Macy’s July 4th annual fireworks, several well-placed sources have confirmed. The famous fireworks show is slated to return to the Long Island City waterfront on the evening of July 4th to mark America’s Independence Day, according to Queens Post sources. July 4th falls on a Monday this year....

Also, RIOC has scheduled a meeting next week to coordinate July 4 activities with local groups giving more credence that the July 4 Fireworks will be close to Roosevelt Island.

But, how will RIOC handle the July 4 viewing ticket lottery distribution this year. Will it be any better than in the past?

As reported last July 5:

Good job by Roosevelt Island Operating Corp (RIOC), NYPD and NYCEM Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) volunteers with crowd control and keeping folks safe for the July 4 celebration.

Still to be questioned and answered are the issues regarding RIOC online lottery registration ticketing process and distribution of tickets outside of that process.

As reported July 3, I asked RIOC Public Information Officer Amy Smith:

... I think most  people understand the need to limit ticket capacity for health and safety concerns.

What gets residents upset is that the online ticket registration process is sold out after 2 minutes and that no process was set up to give Roosevelt Island residents priority for the tickets as has been done every year in the past.

Any comment from RIOC on that issue?

Also:

How many total tickets were available for the July 4 FDR Park Fireworks viewing online registration today?

RIOC said on Monday there were 1500 tickets but the Eventbrite registration page said only 1100 tickets were available.

Which number is accurate? Why are the numbers different?

Also, are there any tickets distributed through sources other than the online registration process? Does FDR Park, NY State or any other entity have an allotment of tickets?

If yes, how many tickets and what are those other sources?...

No response yet from RIOC.

I've been told that tickets (number currently unknown) were given to the Roosevelt Island Disabled Association, Carter Burden Roosevelt Island Senior Center and Roosevelt Island Seniors Association for distribution to their members. In my view, nothing wrong with RIOC giving tickets to these groups but RIOC should be transparent about what groups and individuals are receiving tickets outside of the lottery process.

Here are scenes before, during and after the Roosevelt Island July 4 Fireworks celebration

RIOC never answered the July 4 ticket distribution questions.

Stay tuned for more info as it becomes available.

Fireworks Exploding All Over NYC Last Few Days And On Roosevelt Island Too - RIOC Says PSD Is Monitoring Situation And Making Patrols To Stop Unlawful Fireworks Activity

Fireworks have been exploding all over NYC for the last few days including here on Roosevelt Island. A resident reports:
The other night at around 1am, fireworks were going off over near the island bridge. I kept thinking that public safety would come around and put a stop to it. Although I admirably was up and enjoying them, it did give me pause to think it was real gunshots at some point.
Yesterday,I asked Roosevelt Island Operating Corp (RIOC) Public Safety Chief Kevin Brown:
Residents have been complaining recently about Fireworks going off on Roosevelt Island in recent days.

Any more details or comments about fireworks going off on Roosevelt Islansd?
RIOC sent out this advisory:
RIOC has received complaints about fireworks over the past few days. Remember - fireworks are illegal in NYC. PSD will continue to monitor the island to ensure that everyone remains safe and complies with the law.

Scenes From 2016 Roosevelt Island July 4 Independence Day Celebration - Despite The Rain, Macy's Fireworks Were Spectacular And FDR Four Freedoms Park Was Best Seat In NYC

Some highly motivated people remained at Roosevelt Island's FDR Four Freedoms Park and Southpoint Park last night to view the Macy's July 4 Fireworks celebration.

The hardy souls who waited through a pouring rain for the fireworks to begin, as others quickly left,

were rewarded with a lessening of the rain and a great Macy's July 4 fireworks show.

The Twitterverse shows us portions of the 2016 Macy's July 4 Fireworks seen from Roosevelt Island's FDR Four Freedoms Park.

Here's a look at the July 4 Fireworks from the Roosevelt Island Tram

It began with ticket holders showing their tickets,

and going through security

while others waited at Firefighters Field hoping to get Standby Tickets.

At Southpoint Park, a few people stopped to listen to Shiner and the Kyle Lacy Band on their way towards the main fireworks viewing area at FDR Four Freedoms Park. The band's music was played on the speakers in FDR Four Freedoms Park.

There were supposed to be several food trucks at Southpoint Park but only one showed up

causing some unhappiness for hungry fireworks watchers.
Some were able to get food from the one food truck

and others brought their own food

to picnic

at Southpoint Park.

Upon entering, FDR Four Freedoms Park President Sally Minard

Once inside the FDR Park, people waited on the lawn,

inside the room,

by FDR's head

and on the Queens side promenade

for the fireworks to begin.

While waiting, there was a formation of helicopters flying over

and a red, white and blue

water cannon display.

Take a walk around the FDR Four Freedoms Park as people were settling in and waiting for the fireworks to begin.

A little bit later the rain began but those that stayed had a good show.
Hopefully the July 4 Macy's fireworks will be on the East River again next year and the rain will stay away.

Great News - Roosevelt Island Southpoint And FDR Four Freedoms Park Open To Public For Viewing 2016 Macy's July 4 East River Fireworks Celebration

 Image From Macy's

The 2016 Macy's July 4 Fireworks celebration will take place on the East River for the second straight year after being on the Hudson River from 2009 -2014. NYC Go reports:
It wouldn't be the Fourth of July in New York City without the annual Macy's fireworks show, which made its debut in 1976 to commemorate the nation's bicentennial. In 2016, the iconic display, now located on the East River, will celebrate its 40th anniversary; fireworks will be set off from barges located between the Brooklyn Bridge and Queensboro Bridge....
According to Macy's:
WHERE TO WATCH

Join us as we light up the sky above Manhattan’s East River. Details are on the way!
Roosevelt Island will have great views of the East River Macy's July 4 Fireworks celebration. Here's the view from FDR Four Freedoms Park last year.
I asked Roosevelt Island Operating Corp (RIOC) Acting President Susan Rosenthal yesterday:
Will RIOC allow 2016 Macy's July 4 fireworks viewing at Southpoint Park and FDR Park this year as was done last year?

According to NYC Go, the fireworks will be done in the East River again this year.

If yes, what will the process be for viewing the fireworks.
Ms Rosenthal replied today:
Yes, we will be celebrating our Independence here again! We are coordinating efforts with FDR Four Freedoms Park and Cornell. The process will be similar to last year’s ---with additional “surprises” in the works.
Last year's process for viewing the fireworks was described at this prior post.

Here a snippet of what the 2015 Macy's July 4 Fireworks looked like from FDR Four Freedoms Park.

Scenes From Macy's July 4 Fireworks Celebration At Roosevelt Island Southpoint And FDR Four Freedoms Park - An Awesome Night

For the first time since 2008, Roosevelt Island residents and visitors watched the Macy's July 4 Fireworks from Southpoint Park and FDR Four Freedoms
and it was FANTASTIC.

Yet Another RI'er reports:
Quick recap: it was awesome. I was afraid that it would be mobbed but it was far from it. It seems that pretty much everybody squeezed into the FFP and hardly anybody stayed in SP even though the view was excellent no matter where you were.
Here's the the opening

and finale of the 2015 Macy's July 4 Fireworks celebration at FDR Four Freedoms Park.

Great job by the Roosevelt Island Operating Corp (RIOC) and FDR Four Freedoms Park - Thank You.

There was not much a a crowd at the subway station to leave Roosevelt Island.

FANTASTIC NEWS - Roosevelt Island Southpoint And FDR Four Freedoms Park Open To Public For Viewing Macy's July 4 Fireworks Celebration

On June 18, I asked,

Will Safety And Security Concerns Close Roosevelt Island Southpoint Park And FDR Four Freedoms Park To Public For July 4 East River Fireworks Celebration?
We got our answer at last night's Roosevelt Island Operating Corp (RIOC) Board of Directors meeting and it was GOOD NEWS!!!!!!

RIOC President Charlene Indelicato announced during June 25 Board of Directors meeting that Roosevelt Island's Southpoint Park and FDR Four Freedoms Park will be open to the public for viewing the Macy's July 4 Fireworks celebration.

The views from Roosevelt Island parks should be spectacular because the fireworks will be:
...fired from four barges positioned between 23rd and 37th Streets in Midtown and from one double-barge positioned below the Brooklyn Bridge....

The last time July 4 fireworks could be seen from Roosevelt Island was in 2007

and 2008.

Here's what Ms. Indelicato had to say.

No information other than the parks will be open is currently available. Ms. Indelicato said stay tuned for more details early next week regarding the Macy's Fireworks viewing.

The decision to keep Southpoint and FDR Four Freedoms Park open for the July 4 Macy's Fireworks Celebration is a big surprise for those attending the June 22 RIOC Operations Advisory Committee meeting. (Audio web cast of meeting here. July 4 discussion starts at approx 1 hour 27 minute mark).

During the Operations Advisory Committee meeting, Ms. Indelicato recommended to the RIOC Board Directors closing both parks for the July 4 Fireworks celebration because of safety and security concerns.

Ms. Indelicato explained that due to the Cornell Tech campus construction adjacent to Southpoint Park, the only two roads leading to the Southpoint Park entrance might not be safe for the up to 7 thousand people who might try to view the fireworks at the parks on the southern tip of Roosevelt Island.

Image Of Cornell Tech Construction Site, Southpoint & FDR Park From Faizon Video

According to Ms. Indelicato, the West Promenade Road facing Manhattan has no electricity for nighttime streetlights and East Promenade road is closed with no fencing around the Cornell Tech construction site perimeter.

RIOC Director Margie Smith suggested stringing temporary lights along the West Promenade, as has been done before, to insure safety of those walking to the parks to view the fireworks. Ms. Smith also suggested limiting those able to access the parks to Roosevelt Island residents, or, if that could not be done, distributing tickets in advance and only allow those with tickets to access the parks. Also suggested was having Cornell Tech build a temporary construction fence on the East Road so it can be accessed.

The meeting concluded without a decision by the RIOC Directors other than not to make a decision until RIOC President Indelicato hears back from the Second Floor NY Governor's Office and the NY State Parks Department as to whether Southpoint Park and FDR Park will be open to the public for the July 4 Fireworks Celebration.

Here's the full RIOC Operations Advisory Committee June 22 discussion on the Roosevelt Island July 4 Fireworks viewing at Southpoint And FDR Parks.

It looks like the Second Floor Governor's Office wants the public to be able to watch the July 4 Macy's Fireworks Celebration from Roosevelt Island's Southpoint and FDR Parks.

Now let's see what the details are for public viewing.

UPDATE 7/1 - Here's ticket information for viewing July 4 Macy's Fireworks from Roosevelt Island's Southpoint and FDR Four Freedoms Park.
