RIOC Invites Roosevelt Island Residents To Join Main Street Roadway Project Working Group August 13 Meeting Via Zoom - Hear The Latest Plan And Make Recommendations About Vehicle/Pedestrian Safety And Street Signage

Last March, the Roosevelt Island Operating Corp (RIOC) announced:

At the suggestion of the Roosevelt Island community, RIOC is putting together several new working advisory groups made up of island residents and RIOC personnel to discuss emergent issues on the island. These groups will offer recommendations and feedback to RIOC on some of the most pressing issues we face, from safety and transportation to economic development and capital planning....
Previous working advisory group sessions were on the Tram and Island operations.
Today RIOC announced an upcoming community working group meeting to discuss the ongoing Main Street Roadway project.
According to RIOC:
Dear Roosevelt Island Residents:

RIOC is putting together its next community working group, made up of island residents and RIOC personnel, to discuss the ongoing roadways project along Main Street.

As many have noticed, driving down Main Street is hardly a “smooth ride.” The road, which is still made up of z-bricks in large sections, is bumpy, uneven, and difficult for both motorists and pedestrians to safely navigate, especially at the crosswalks. What’s more, signage around the island can be difficult to understand in some places and contradictory in others, further compounding problems for travelers.

This working group will hear plans about ways to address the issues plaguing Main Street and offer recommendations and feedback to RIOC on managing the overall project, currently scheduled for two phases of work.

The first meeting of the roadways working group will be on Tuesday, August 13th and will meet online via Teams (no Microsoft account necessary to participate).

If you are interested in participating, please fill-out the form at this link:

This group is a wonderful way for Roosevelt Island residents to get involved and have their ideas heard and discussed with fellow island stakeholders and RIOC.

We look forward to your participation and can’t wait to hear your feedback!

Young Girl Attending Roosevelt Island PS/IS 217 Monster Bash Halloween Party This Afternoon Hit By Car As She Crossed Main Street To Capobianco Field - She's OK

Matt Katz shares this message he sent to Roosevelt Island Operating Corp (RIOC) President Shelton Haynes this afternoon about the incident:

Sherie and I were walking towards Food Town today at 4:30 p.m. The school was hosting a "Monster Bash" in Capobianco Field.

We saw many small kids running across the intersection between the school and the field unsupervised and without a Public Safety officer in the crosswalk. This seemed terribly dangerous and we stopped to warn the adults selling tickets at the school as well as a school security guard that this was an accident waiting to happen. They promised to call Public Safety and we left.

When we returned from shopping around 40 minutes later we saw many FDNY, NYPD and Public Safety vehicles in front of PS/IS 217. A child, a young girl we learned, had been hit by a car and right at the school crosswalk.

The woman we had spoken to, a school mom, told us that she had called Public Safety and been told that they were understaffed. This was a major school event involving children crossing the street in large numbers and Public Safety did not see fit to guard the area.

I am disgusted. If liaising with our City public school is not a priority for them, what is? The girl, we were told, was not badly hurt, thank god, but it could easily have been otherwise.

Public Safety is not burdened with major crime here and guarding our intersections when school lets out or when large movements of kids across the street can be anticipated seems to me to be within their purview.

A child was hurt today needlessly. A child could have been killed.

If communication is the problem, fix it. If incompetence is the problem, fix that. A dear friend came home from hospital and rehab care just today after being run over at a Main Street crossing. This has got to stop.

A Roosevelt Island PS/IS 217 parent adds:

I'm a mom of 217 and I was in the event. I called PSD at 4:26 to ask them to send officers as kids were crossing the street without looking. They said they were “short staffed and couldn’t send anyone, and recommended I speak to the organizer of the event”. After the event, I went back to ask for a report of the call. They said it would be ready in 2 weeks.

The accident happened around 5pm. The girl is ok fortunately (only her foot).

The PTA did an extraordinary work to fundraise for our kids. All volunteers. Shouldn’t be blamed for this.

RIOC President Haynes replied to Mr. Katz:

Thank you for reaching out and sharing your concern on this horrible incident. Chief Brown called me on the matter and we are awaiting all of the details. I assure you that public safety is our priority and we will provide an update soon on this matter.

Coincidentally, the Twitterverse commented on Roosevelt Island car traffic today.

UPDATE 10/16: RIOC President Shelton Haynes issues statement this statement at 5:42 PM:

I am extremely saddened and concerned by the escalating incidents that further highlight a need for reexamination of Main Street and island promenades as it pertains to safely traversing this progressive island.

Those who were personally and heartbreakingly impacted, as well as all residents and visitors, can be assured that RIOC will be immediately addressing these safety issues with both short-term and long-term plans. We are treating this with the utmost urgency, seriousness, and importance needed to restore the feeling of safety to all.

Our immediate plans for Main Street and island promenades are as follows:
Main Street Safety Improvements:

  • Two crossing guards will be posted on Main Street near PS/IS 217 intersections during school hours.
  • Speed bumps will be strategically placed on Main Street.
  • Portable radar signs will be placed in strategic locations on Main Street.

Promenade Safety Improvements:

  • Restriction of vehicles, motorized scooters, and e-bikes on promenades. However, emergency vehicles or permitted vehicles will be escorted by PSD.
  • Public Safety officers will be posted on the west promenade to ensure compliance.
  • New signage will be ordered.

In the most recent incident and to dispel misinformation, Public Safety Department (PSD) officers were in the vicinity of the event when the incident occurred. It was an unfortunate accident that could have easily been a tragedy, which is a further reason for great concern. As another point of clarification, the Public Safety Department is not short-staffed as we have only one vacant position at this time.

Roosevelt Island Main Street Retail Update - Kamin Health Urgent Care Medical Facility Closes Out Of Business Last Monday But Pup Culture Pet Store Opens On Same Day

The Kamin Health Roosevelt Island Urgent Care medical facility opened for business in December 2016 but went out of business this week on Monday, April1. A sign was attached to the store window announcing the closing and also indicating that The Roosevelt Doctors Jack Resnick and Kathy Grimm will continue to see patients at the 520 Main Street location.

I asked Dr Resnick today:
With Urgent Care leaving Roosevelt Island, do you have any comment on future plans for providing medical service to the Roosevelt Island community?

Do you think you will expand your practice to make up for Urgent Care's departure?
Dr Resnick replied:
Yes, I do and have begun work on it...
Stay tuned for more info from Dr Resnick.

Better news is that the new Roosevelt Island pet store - Pup Culture - opened for business on Monday.

Pup Culture has existing locations in Soho and Tribeca. According to Pup Culture:
Established in 2002, Pupculture is one of the original pioneers of New York City's Dog Day care. We also carry a selection of fine pet accessories, treats, and health products in our boutique.
Earlier today, this little dog was exercising in the Roosevelt Island Pup Culture playroom

that can be easily seen as you walk on Main Street.

Since then, Lisa Management has signed two new retail tenants: the forthcoming Liukoshui hot pot restaurant and PupCulture pet care and spa service.
With a little practice, maybe you can do this.

Roosevelt Island Say Goodbye To Island House Main Street Steps, Coop Board Removing Steps For Reconfigured Lobby Area And New Door Station - Check Out Island House Apartments For Sale

The long time steps leading up from Roosevelt Island's Main Street to the Island House lobby

are in the process of being demolished this week.

According to the Island House Coop Board Of Directors
The Island House Board of Directors is pleased to announce that the Island House lobby expansion and reconfiguration program is underway. The project will include relocating the main entrance through the historic Good Shepherd Plaza and will include enclosing the existing outdoor entry area with new energy efficient glass curtain wall, enhanced security, as well as a new door station and energy efficient entry door system. An all redesigned interior lobby will provide residents with an efficient, comfortable and lovely lobby experience.

The first phase of the project involves the removal of the steps that jut out into the sidewalk along Main Street. The removal of the first set of steps at 575 Main Street started on Wednesday. Board President Amrah Cardoso said “the Board is very happy to help improve the Main Street experience for all Roosevelt Island residents by removing those steps.” The initial idea for removing the steps, according to Cardoso, came from RIOC, who offered financial support and a contribution of the z-bricks needed to restore the sidewalk after the removal of the steps. The scope of the project increased substantially, according to Cardoso, once the removal of the steps was included into the project design.

Removal of the steps and restoration of the sidewalk is expected to take approximately 2 weeks and the remainder of the project is expected to be completed by April. Island residents are requested to follow the directional information and safety construction signs and only to cross in designated cross walks and temporary walkways. Always follow instructions of Public Safety Officers.

Roosevelt Island Retail Update - First NYC Taking Temporary Main Street Space For STEM & Robotics Educational Programming Before Moving Into Permanent Home At Cornell Tech Campus

Roosevelt Island retail update.

A tipster reported yesterday seeing work being done inside one of the long empty Roosevelt Island storefronts at 544 Main Street. The Tipster learned that the new tenant to occupy the space will offer STEM (Science, Technology Engineering & Mathematics), 3D printing and advanced technology educational programming.

I asked Main Street Retail Master Leaseholder Hudson Related about the new tenant.  Hudson Companies representative Alex Kaplan replied:

NYC First will be taking space in Roosevelt Landings temporarily. NYC First runs educational programming related to STEM including robotics classes and competitions for youth. They will be in our space through the spring when they will take a permanent space in the Cornell Tech campus. We think it will be a nice temporary use and compliment the Music & Play Station across the street.

First New York City is:
... a regional office of FIRST®, the 501c3 nonprofit organization created to inspire youth to pursue further studies and careers in science and technology and to help students acquire the knowledge and skills needed to compete in the technologically-driven global economy.

FIRST® programs all share two basic components:
  • engagement of students in the creative, hands-on, minds-on process of technological innovation; and
  • bringing communities together to celebrate the achievements of kids working smart in science and technology.
Participation in FIRST® has a positive impact on the lives of students, increasing college attendance, majors in science and engineering, participation in internships and co-ops, and involvement in community service.

Reported in February 2017, that the Roosevelt Island Girl Scout Troop 3001 Roaring Lions team finished third and reached the semi-finals in NYC First Lego Robotics competition.

Welcome to Roosevelt Island, First New York City.

Roosevelt Island Main Street Retail Update - China 1 Restaurant Renovation Has Sleek New Look, New BubbleCool Tea Shop Getting Ready To Open & Trellis/Nisi Owner Still Hopes To Be Back In Business Soon

Roosevelt Island's China 1 restaurant was closed for a few days recently while undergoing renovations. I walked by China 1

yesterday and was stunned to see how nice the renovated interior looked with new window seating

and large picnic table placed in the corner.

Customers remarked how wonderful the renovated space looked.

Take a look.

Renovation work was also being done yesterday on the new BubbleCool Tea shop scheduled to open this summer

and Trellis/Nisi diner owner Kai Razaghi was on site too.

Mr. Razaghi told residents asking when Trellis/Nisi will re-open that he still did not have a set date yet, but definitely will re-open and be back in business as soon as he can.
