Tuesday, July 3, 2012I have been noticing more and more around Manhattan middle eastern women panhandling with their child. They all seem to have the same gimmick where the child is sleeping. It can be 90 degrees and the mother is with the child panhandling. I feel horrible for the child and I am very concerned about the welfare of the child or in this case, children who I have seen all over Manhattan being exploited by the mother panhandling. I have reported this to the police many times but nothing seems to happen to solve this epidemic. I have called social child services and they said to call the police. Something should be done about this because it’s getting worse. I have also contacted Fox News, CBS, NBC, NY 1 News, WPIX and no one has contact me about this. I am not sure who to reach out to in order to do something about this. Any help will be appreciated becuase these kids are suffereing. The places I have seen this happen is 48 and park, 46 and Madison, 87 and 3rd, 54 and Lexington.
Please visit my blogAny help to stop this is appreciated,http://childrensuffer.blogspot.com

I think they are Roma. I have been noticing that their presence is increasing quite a bit here in NYC lately. The whole spiel with the kid is just a way for them to get money. I see the same woman with a different child all the time in the F train on the way home.

I don't want to minimize in any way what your're saying Dante, but this reminds me a bit of some beggars who use little cats or dogs to elicit donations.  I've seen this for years - sometimes they'd be by the tram stop on the Manhattan side, but I've seen them elsewhere.  Just like your remarks about the kids, I've also wondered about the seemingly utterly docile, half-asleep pets in little boxes on the street.

You should keep up trying to get this begging with kids looked into/stopped however - that has to be endangering a child's safety I would think.  One thing you could do is snap a photo with your cell phone and include that with any emails to public officials/police/press etc.  I definitely think the kids (and the pets) should be kept out of the begging "shtick".
