Roosevelt Island Operating Corp (RIOC) is reporting problems with Roosevelt Island Verizon Phone service after the departure of Hurricane Irene.
Please be advised that due to the storm, the RI Public Safety Phone Number is not in service. All emergency calls for service must be made to 9-1-1.

The Administrative Offices for RIOC have extremely limited phone service at this time. All non-emergency calls should be made to 3-1-1.

However, our information hotline is still in operation at 212-308-6608

Repair technicians from Verizon have been notified. We are awaiting dispatch crews for repair.

In addition, we have received numerous notifications by residents that their Verizon phones are not working in their apartments. Verizon advises that customers call for service using a cell phone or a neighbor's phone.

Sincerely,

Roosevelt Island Operating Corp Advisories Group

Very disturbing pix given that the RIOC Advisory writers would have us believe that nothing occurred here in the land of Oz.

More disturbing that RIOC and RI PSD do not have even an emergency cell number to give out in case of local emergency. Let's think that one over again. No back up ?

While we were pretty lucky this time, we remain isolated and forgotten by Cuomo, Bloomberg and Ms Torres, who I think left town on Thursday. Oh, and ignored by our local media.

There is absolutely nothing disturbing in these pictures. Just a bit of flooding that didn't get into anybody's way. Let's stop blowing this storm out of proportions and keep it what it is... a tropical storm that caused very little damage in this island. It's not like NYC had more severe storms to deal with in the recent past.

I gave up Verizon years ago when I noticed I had no computer access every time it rained.  I switched to Time-Warner Cable and have had no trouble ever since.

I deeply regret the day that Verizon agent was outside our building promising all kinds of wonderful services... it has been a complete nightmare ever since I signed on with Verizon.  Should have stayed with TWC. Went through hurricane with no phone and occasional internet.  Verizon are an utterly incompetent company - good at sales and marketing that's all.

Verizon's not all that bad said...

My experience is the exact opposite. In those 2+ years with FiOS (TV, Internet, and phone) I didn't have one outage of service. Not one. Billing was a bit screwy especially when you also have Wireless and One Bill but that's a different story.

TWC, on the other hand, I had so many outages per year with them (I was TWC customer for many, many years) that I was fed up and was glad to make the switch.

glad to hear that it's not all bad news with verizon.  In my case the complaint list is a litany of one episode after another : it would be funny if it were not so painful ... for example when the engineer came round to do the install and told me that i cannot get high speed fios on the 10th floor of eastwood because the high speed cables only go to the 4th floor.  after 1 month and two sessions of independent verification my old number still remains not transfered. the phone line does not work at all for 1 month. the internet is on and off.  when I call verizon I'm told 'wait 2 days' ... then am given direct line numbers to call back on that lead to individuals who have nothing to do with verizon ... false names from call center agents... on and on and on !
