Learn how Cornell Tech's Clinic to End Tech Abuse helps survivors navigate technology abuse and empowers their use of technology.

As our lives becomes increasingly reliant on digital technologies such as smartphones, email, and social media, the threat of their being used against us looms large. In this talk, Thomas Ristenpart will discuss a context where weaponization of technology against people is tragically routine: intimate partner violence (IPV).

Ristenpart is part of a research group that has studied the role technology plays in IPV situations. Via interviews with survivors and support professionals, online measurement studies, and investigation of malicious software tools purpose-built for abuse, they have documented how abusers exploit technology to control, harass, stalk, and otherwise harm their current or former partner. To help survivors, they work with technology companies and lawmakers to affect positive changes and, more directly, have put into practice a new interventional approach that they call clinical computer security.

Their Clinic to End Tech Abuse works in partnership with the New York City Mayor's Office to End Domestic and Gender-Based Violence to help survivors navigate technology abuse and, ultimately, empower their use of technology. This talk will cover joint work with a large number of collaborators and clinic volunteers.

Here's a June 2022 presentation on Mitigating Technology Abuse In Intimate Partner Violence by Professor Ristennpart.

Watch Video Of Cornell Tech Digital Life Initiative Roosevelt Island Community Conversation Last Evening - Social Media Political Manipulation Of Elections, Ads Tracking Your Online Habits & More

The Cornell Tech campus location on Roosevelt Island offers residents an opportunity to participate in timely and interesting discussions about important current and future issues concerning technology and society. Last evening, December 16, the Cornell Tech Digital Life Initiative (DLI) hosted:

...  a panel discussion about technology and society, including privacy, social media, behavioral advertising, and media manipulation. Panelists include Helen Nissenbaum, Lee McGuigan, Noa Mor, Yael Eisenstat, and MC Forelle....

Among the issues discussed at last evenings Roosevelt Island Community Conversation were social media political manipulation of elections on Facebook. Responding to a question on this subject from a Roosevelt Island resident, DLI's Yael Eisenstat said:
... when a political advertiser wants to advertise to you, traditionally they would have to on network news or even cable news they can target you by location. They can have different ads run in different markets but they couldn't get as specific as - I want this ad to be shown to women of this certain age who have this certain political leaning who look like they might be voting for this person.

I won't get into all the details on how marketing works but it means that you and you might live near each other but the two of you might be served completely different ads and if that's the case than we're not coming from the same starting point. We don't even have the beginning starting point of where this conversation began because we're each being shown different things.

So for me, the big question, the big debacle around whether or not politicians should be allowed to lie in ads. Again that is a bigger debate about how you feel about freedom of speech versus paid advertising.

My bigger concern is the way we are able to be targeted with those ads and if we allow unchecked lying and political advertising to be hyper-targeted to us. There is no way that's an even playing field or what a democracy means in order to thrive....

Other question included personal targeted advertising by companies and individuals web browsing being tracked online.

Here's the full Cornell Tech DLI Roosevelt Island Community Conversation from beginning to end. Stay tuned for announcement of next Roosevelt Island event.

The Cornell Tech DLI intends to continue the Roosevelt Island Community conversations in 2020.

You're Invited To Learn About Human Interaction With Self Driving Cars At Cornell Tech Faculty Roosevelt Island Community Conversation With Professor Wendy Ju Thursday October 10

You're invited to learn about human interaction with self driving cars.

 Image From Cornell Tech

The Cornell Tech Faculty Roosevelt Island Community conversation begins a second year on Thursday October 10 with a presentation by Professor Wendy Ju on:
Interaction With Automation:
According to Cornell Tech

Where did this $^@#$! Autonomous Car Learn to Drive? Addressing Cross-cultural differences in Autonomous Car Design.

About this Event

Today’s autonomous cars are designed to follow the letter of the local law, but do not adapt to regional variations in driving behavior. At scale, this lack of adaptation can cause accidents and cost lives. Wendy Ju will talk about recent and on-going research to understand how cross-cultural differences should inform the design of autonomous cars.

About Wendy

Wendy Ju is an Assistant Professor at the Jacobs Technion-Cornell Institute at Cornell Tech and in the Information Science field at Cornell University. Her work in the areas of human-robot interaction and automated vehicle interfaces highlights the ways that interactive devices can communicate and engage people without interrupting or intruding. Dr. Ju has innovated numerous methods for early-stage prototyping of automated systems to understand how people will respond to systems before the systems are built. She has a PhD in Mechanical Engineering from Stanford, and a Master’s in Media Arts and Sciences from MIT.

This event is FREE and open to the public.

More about Professor's Ju's work with self driving cars here:
... To date, Ju has carried out most of her experiments around Stanford. She has found that people there are pretty nonchalant when they encounter robots. “A lot of people are very pro-technology and they also work in technology so they’re very much like, ‘Oh yeah, this is happening now,’” she said.

Having recently moved to New York City, she is curious to find out whether people will behave differently or the same way. One of her first projects at Cornell Tech will explore how people interact with a troupe of chair robots -— essentially chairs that can reconfigure themselves in a space. She will also carry out further on-road experiments with ghost drivers....

Part 4 Of Roosevelt Island Cornell Tech Community Conversation - Watch Law Professor James Grimmelmann Presentation On Sealand/Haven Co, Is Internet Out Of Control, Are Tech Companies Undermining Government Regulation, Is That Good Or Bad?

Cornell Tech has initiated a series of Roosevelt Island Community Conversations between residents and Cornell Tech Faculty. The fourth  conversation took place April 29 with Professor James Grimmelmann presentation on Law & Technology:

Does it seem like the Internet is out of control? Are technology companies undermining government control and freeing people to do absolutely anything they want online? And is that a good thing or a bad thing?

James Grimmelmann studies law and technology. He tries to understand today's digital controversies by looking for times when similar things have happened in the past. He will explain current struggles to regulate technology by telling the unbelievable real-life tale of HavenCo, one of the unlikeliest startups of all time. Its headquarters was an abandoned World War II anti-aircraft platform seven miles off the British coast — and the story just gets weirder from there. It includes pirate radio, machine guns, rampant copyright infringement, a Red Bull skateboarding special, perpetual motion machines, and the Montevideo Convention on the Rights and Duties of States.

James will use the story of HavenCo as a jumping-off point for a conversation about technology and democracy.
It was a fascinating presentation. Watch it below
