It is sad to see RIOC prioritize
parking for cars ahead of benches for elderlies and handicapped
at the bus stations.RIOC clearly
listen to the few and disregard
the majority. This step encourages driving and parking on the streets (and elsewhere)contrary to the original pedestrian concept of an island with frequent reliable bus service to/from Motorgate from all locations.

actually it reduces congestion bc people don't drive around the island looking for parking. Prevents double parking because parking is used for its short-term purpose and I read that motorgate short term rates will be reduced to encourage short term in the garage. Also less double parking and illegal parking allows the red bus to move around easier and less traffic congestion. This is why this started in San Francisco, because it a great way to include parking, but keep it on a street for short term purposes. Also its not a choice of benches or anything else. RIOC is buying benches. The only place that has an issue is Rivercross. If you live in that building please lobby your board to allow it.

Car traffic should be banned from the island altogether. There is absolutely no reason not to try such thing here. The handicapped and elderlies can use shuttle buses and the rest of us red bus service to get around. There. Money could be used for strategies like that instead of improving parking.

I'd like to see you get all of the stuff you bought at costco or the grocery store into your apartment lobby without a car.

Yes. The poster above who says get rid of all cars is funny. I think we should put him in charge of telling everyone on the island they have to sell their cars in an auction in 30 days. What about the school buses or the hospitals that own their land and are city property not state? What about deliveries? Are you going to put martial law into place to do this great sale of autos? Eminent domain? Maybe people can swim to the island to reduce subway traffic. Tell us more oh wise one.

I do hope "anonimous" above does not drive his car into his apartment building just because he shopped at Costco or the grocery store.

Many of us offload our purchases
on the curb and bring them into our apartment building using valets or large shopping carts which the building(s) provide for that purpose.
You will also see many people carry several bags on the Red Bus.

Guess what? I have a family of 5 and I *walk* to Costco a couple of times a month and *walk* my purchases back home either in a shopping cart or in a backpack, or in shopping bags (the big IKEA bags are awesome for that). But you are right, we need a way to transport stuff from the garage to our homes. How about for loading and unloading purposes you can park your car in front of your building for 20 minutes max. Then you have to move it into a garage.

Also, where was it suggested that all cars should be auctioned off? Park your cars in Motorgate. Certain other traffic is allowed, of course. Public transportation, loading and unloading (restricted to certain times of the day), shuttles for the senior citizens and handicaps.

Roosevelt Island would be *perfect* to be turned into a car-free neighborhood. AFAIK there was a time back then when this was the case.
